We recently connected with Clayton Mathias and have shared our conversation below.
Clayton, appreciate you joining us today. What’s the best advice you ever gave to a client? How did they benefit / what was the result? (Please note this response is for education/entertainment purposes only and shouldn’t be construed as advice for the reader)
I had a client once who firmly believed that their purpose was to help and be of service to others. The challenge for the client was that always focusing on the needs of others, or anticipating others’ needs was quite exhausting.
One of the topics I coach on is Purpose. To me, Purpose is the combination of one’s unique personal qualities, and the way one expresses them, that yields the highest levels of Joy for a person. Joy is Purpose. So I asked my client if they feel Joy in being of service to others. The answer wasn’t too clear to my client, and after discussion, the general feeling was at best a clouded sense of satisfaction, for the self sacrifice of serving others.
We were able to dig into the client’s Purpose further, and did find attributes of Joy in helping others; however, an inner sense of Joy was to be the guiding light for my client. In being of service to others, my client needed to first feel the spark of Joy within, to truly know if they were expressing their Purpose in any moment of servitude. After this shift in my client’s mindset, they truly described feeling more inspiration, and less exhaustion in the moments they chose to help others.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
As a kid, I started developing a pretty positive mindset for myself. I noticed that as a result of my thoughts, I could generally experience two types of emotion – positive or negative emotion. I spent more time daydreaming and imagining possibilities that sparked positive emotion, and noticed that this generated wildly exciting results in my life. When I felt good, I felt inspired, and I seemed to get what I wanted quite effortlessly. It was as an adult that I happened to discover The Law of Attraction, and realized I was living by many of its principles unintendedly. The moment I uncovered the science around how I was creating amazing experiences for myself, I couldn’t stop learning more and more about it, and it all starts with one’s mindset.
I’ve continued exploring many subjects around self development and spirituality. Right now I’m digging into A Course in Miracles which has really expanded my understanding of how the mind is our channel to our Higher Self (spirit). That how at any moment we can be in tune or out of tune with our Higher Self, and that is our choice.
Recently working at a larger company I realized I wasn’t effectively able to mentor others, simply due to the demands of the job. Having dug into my own Purpose around that time, I came to the conclusion that I get a lot of Joy mentoring. I decided to start my coaching business – Magnetic Mind, to be the avenue for me to express my Purpose. Now I coach people on mindset and Higher Self connection, which is relevant to all aspects of life – personal and business.

Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
I’m practicing being ‘not-nice’ at the moment. I’ve realized that I have a strong programming that defaults to being nice around others. Being not-nice isn’t about being an asshole, rather ensuring that what I’m feeling internally is honored and expressed authentically, and that to others might sound a bit edgy. It’s as simple as interrupting if I’m sensing frustration when someone is overtalking, or taking up too much of my space. I notice I have repressed and just swallowed my emotions in certain moments, and that erodes authentically. Our societal norm is to be nice, pleasant, and keep the peace so as not to disturb – it’s that programming that can trip us up sometimes.
Have you ever had to pivot?
Besides my coaching business I’m also a freelance consultant in the energy sector. A few years ago my wife and me moved to Berlin and after working full time at companies in Berlin, and experiencing working from the home office through 2020 and 2021, I decided to structure my energy sector work around a freelancer model and left the traditional in the office employee model, so that I could work more flexibly from home. With two freelance businesses on the go now, it’s quite exciting and leaves me with lots of opportunities to travel, and explore other passions and interests.
