We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Clayton Bryant a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Clayton thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. We’d love to hear about the best boss, mentor, or leader you’ve ever worked with.
One of the best Mentors I’ve had if I may say 2 were Luther Vandross & Roger Daltrey Of The Who. Luther taught me not to be afraid of my voice experiment with the texture & tones, but also taught me precision how to blend well singing background vocals. Roger Daltrey taught me how to be fearless onstage. He said I reminded him of Otis Redding not so much in voice but my energy how I could command the audience. touring with him was an everyday eye opening experience. He had me sing his lead parts on Good Morning America which led me to duetting with him for the rest of the tour. And he wrote me an incredible letter of encouragement when the tour was over.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I am a NYC born & raised Grammy & ASCAP Award Singer-songwriter. I started my career at 5yrs old doing fashion shows etc. Doing session work as a kid led me to becoming one of the youngest most sought after background vocalists in NYC. With that and training from The Boys Choir Of Harlem/Choir Academy Of Harlem. & The NY Boys Choir/NYCHA Youth Chorus. I’ve sung with some of Music’s most legendary Artists such as Michael Jackson, Elton John, Bruce Springsteen, Luther Vandross, Roger Daltrey, Michael Bolton, Cyndi Lauper, Bette Midler etc to name a few. ON Albums & Live Concerts across the globe. My ear has always been on point and in the music which has been beneficial in calling me for sessions etc as well as contracting vocals (booking other singers) for projects. I think what sets me apart form others is, I’m a student of the music. I need to know who’s singing lead, backgrounds (who’s singing what part). the instruments etc. Also I learned every part of the music so I could be ready to sing any note that was given or needed. I’m most proud of being called on still on projects or stages for legendary artists even though I’ve embarked on my own solo career. The fact that I can do both thrills me still. I want people to know that when you hire me or come see me perform. I’m giving you what I was taught. Performance, Visual, Great Vocals. the production has to be on point. I wont mess with your ticket money for sure. you come out with an experience!
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
The most rewarding aspect for me as an artist is, when people tell me they listen to my music year round (especially my Christmas Album). or they’re singing one of my songs to me. Lets me know my music has touched someone in some positive way. Helps to keep me going. Being an indie artist in this era is very tough. So much “Competition” and easy access to so much. But I stay in my lane and am proud of the people who want to hear my story and are touched by it.
Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
In my creative journey my main goal is to be HEARD. there’s so much music out in the world and Good music at that. I come from an era of artists where they had no social media so they got out there and pushed & promoted. I still have that same work ethic. I am my own Boss/Booking Agent/Manager. Not so much because I want to be, but because I have to be. My brand is important and no one else will represent it better than I can. When people hear the name CLAYTON BRYANT or see my shows I want them to feel like they’ve just come from one of the biggest shows they’ve seen in their life. I want you to laugh, cry & dance. Music is healing and I aim to be part of that always.
