We recently connected with Clay Geisendorff and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Clay, thanks for joining us today. Do you think your parents have had a meaningful impact on you and your journey?
My parents instilled in me the idea of hard work equals results. If you work hard enough you can overcome your shortcomings and achieve your goals in a quicker fashion.
In my younger years my spring breaks were never my spring break. One spring break began with the sound of a dump truck backing into the driveway. These trucks were dumping 34 yards of dirt and that would be my alarm clock. The only thing I did during this spring break was move dirt and level dirt. Another spring break was full of fence building. The point was not what we were building each spring break. It was when we were done each day, my dad and I would sit back, look around and share in a sense of accomplishment earned out of all the work we put in throughout the day.
These spring breaks, which were always full of hard work taught me lessons that I didn’t understand at the time. Start your day early, put in the work and the results at the end of each day are worth more than money can buy.
Clay, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
We were looking for additional revenue streams to help our burgeoning business Trinity Grove homes. I thought a pressure washing service business could bring in a reliable income during our slow times and thus our pressure washing company was born.
One of the things I am most proud of about our pressure washing brand and our pressure washing company is that our business is built on customer service and the hard work we do each and every day. We have constant conversations about how to better our business and serve our customers as best we can. We deliberate about each job throughout the day. We are diligent in going over every job and problem solving every single aspect of that job. What could we have done better and why? What did we do great and how can we improve on that greatness?
When we are talking to our customers and working at their home or business, we want to treat each customer like family. We believe that by treating our customers the best way we can, we will build a successful business. We have made the conscious decision to build our company, and our brand based on hard work, kindness and good old-fashioned family values. Our goal is to have repeat customers who let us serve them year after year. We are so proud of our repeat customers when they call us back and they need us to do work again. Each time it is reassuring that we have done a great job and that we can fulfill the pressure washing services they need done at their home or business.
Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
Resilience and Hard work are great multipliers in any business. There are a lot of things you must overcome when you are running your own business. The low points can keep you down. What you have to learn is a way to work harder and move on from a low point or disappointment. These times will not define you or your business but how you choose to move on and learn from each situation will show your true character. One day can be stacked against you in ways that you cannot understand. Genuine hard-working perseverance gets you through that day and brings you on to the next day. When you have that hard work under your belt the easy days get easier, and the harder days get easier as well.
Can you open up about how you funded your business?
3. Starting this business, we had to find funding on our own as more of a bootstrap campaign. We put in our own personal money, and we borrowed start-up funds from family and friends. The most important thing we did not want was to find ourselves buried in large amounts of debt early on. We chose pressure washing machines, which were commercial and a good quality setup so that we could be successful in achieving high quality results. However, we did not go overboard early on spending money on unnecessary equipment and vehicles that we did not absolutely need to provide our customers with the best result possible. As time has gone on, we have added to our equipment as well as the services we offer. When you are just starting out you do not need the best setup in the industry as this is a cost that will eventually put you out of business before you even get started. I see a lot of people get into our industry and think they have to go buy the shiny expensive over the top pressure washing equipment and they end up going out of business trying to pay for them.
The biggest thing we learned starting out, is that if we do not have the customers, we do not deserve the crazy expensive flashy pressure washing equipment. Overspending is the quickest way to going under as a business We work hard to make our equipment work for us.
