We were lucky to catch up with Claudia Matos recently and have shared our conversation below.
Claudia, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. We’d love to hear about how you went about setting up your own practice and if you have any advice for professionals who might be considering starting their own?
Establishing my practice was no small feat, but I knew it was something I needed to do to avoid burnout. Sounds crazy, right? Starting a business on the verge of burnout? It was the best thing I could’ve done. I was at the point in my life that felt as if I was questioning my entire career when I knew this had always been my calling and passion so something had to be done. In the process of beginning my practice, I’ve learned so much and made so many great connections! If I was to give any advice to someone trying to start their own practice, I’d suggest connecting with other professionals that share your same interest and already have a practice of their own. You’d be surprised how many professionals are willing to help and share their knowledge!

Claudia, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
Helping others has always been my passion and I love the career I’ve chosen. My background is in social work and I’m licensed in the state of Florida, South Carolina, and Vermont. In my practice, I’ve taken my own experience as a people-pleasing perfectionist and used it to help others who struggle with it as well. I know how easily the anxiety and stress can creep in to our day-to-day so I began my own research and learned all about how to cope with anxiety outside of the usual ‘take a deep breath’ response. I pride myself on walking with my clients to challenge that negative inner dialogue and helping them accomplish that free feeling they’ve always desired. I also lovvvve working with couples and helping them remember why they fell in love! Whether it’s rebuilding communication, trust, or having those difficult discussions, I’m here to help!

If you could go back, would you choose the same profession, specialty, etc.?
1000000000% (I don’t know if there are enough zeros!) Simplest answer, YES! I love the flexibility of my degree and how it has helped me explore so many different avenues throughout my career. I learned so much in every position I’ve held and worked with the best clients who will forever have a special spot in my heart.
We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
Hard Work = Success. True, but also not true! I believe in working hard to achieve your goals, but I do not believe in working long and endless hours and putting yourself (and your partner, family, health, wellbeing, etc) on the backburner. Too often I work with clients that have yet to develop that balance and are struggling to find the happiness they deserve, but once we’re able to establish boundaries they’re able to experience peace. The trick is working hard while taking care of yourself will make the journey to success so much happier!
