One of my most cherished stories revolves around a remarkable residential design project in the picturesque town of Lloyd Harbor, NY. It all began when a couple reached out to me in search of an interior designer who could bring their transitional home to life with distinct period spaces. As passionate antique collectors, they possessed a captivating assortment of furnishings and decor spanning different design periods from the 1700s to the early 1900s. Initially, their vision encompassed a Victorian-style dining room and a French Empire parlor.
Having been listed as one of the top 15 interior design firms on Long Island, they contacted several firms, including mine, for an initial consultation. However, while others agreed to visit their home and provide a free consultation, I stood firm in my design practices and refused. I firmly believe that a successful interior design consultation requires meticulous preparation on my part. To introduce prospective clients to a world of design possibilities and inspiration, I curate bespoke trays filled with exquisite design samples, ranging from fabrics and trims to wallpapers. This approach sets Grunberger Interiors apart from other firms, as I aim to come prepared and demonstrate that seeing and touching products is more impactful and immersive than mere conversation.
Based on my background, education, and direct experience in understanding the nuances of various historical artistic periods, I knew I was exceptionally qualified to deliver the interior of their dreams. The contrast between my comprehensive two-hour paid consultation, which encompassed the entire house and featured luxurious materials, colors, textures, and design motifs specific to each period, and the other designers’ brief free walkthroughs couldn’t have been more striking. The other consults were very general and instead of sharing their expertise on the different design styles, they instead asked my clients what they envisioned for each space. My clients cleverly responded that if they already knew what would be appropriate for each space, they would not have sought professional assistance. It was a risk to insist upon my design consultation fee while so many designers were willing to come for free in the hope of securing a new project. I am very grateful to my clients for giving me the chance to present my unique design perspective and knowledge.
Since then, I have continued to work on the remodeling of their beautiful home, taking it one space at a time. Throughout the process, we have fostered a long-lasting friendship built on trust, respect, and plenty of laughter along the way. This project is truly unique and provides me with the opportunity to indulge in period design, which has become a personal favorite.
