We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Claudia Gamarra a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Claudia, appreciate you joining us today. So, let’s imagine that you were advising someone who wanted to start something similar to you and they asked you what you would do differently in the startup-process knowing what you know now. How would you respond?
If I was to start over, I would of began my career studying skincare/permanent makeup. I was eight months of my time and had spent thousands of dollars on cosmetology school before I realized I wanted to focus on skincare. I wanted to be the best at one thing and I felt cosmetology was too big of a focus for me to succeed in the health and beauty industry.
Claudia, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
When I arrived in the US, seven years ago, I made the decision to switch careers. I went from running a newspaper in Venezuela to becoming a Skin Care Specialist and permanent makeup artist. I chose to work in beauty world because it gave me the opportunity to be my own boss. My spa is called By Clau Consulting. I started it three years ago in Tampa, Florida. I do micro-pigmentation and facial treatments. What sets me apart from others is that I also teach classes in Advanced Esthetics and Permanent Makeup. When my clients enter my spa, they are greeted by the beautiful decor, soft colors, and a welcoming interior. One thing different about my spa is the attention I give to my clients; it’s one hundred percent personalized service. I attempt to exceed my clients needs. During my consultations, I’m focused on providing the best experience for my clients. What I am most proud is that all my first time clients have become regular patrons of my business. I believe this speaks to my ability to satisfy my clients needs.
What’s been the best source of new clients for you?
The best source of new clients for my business is through social media, specifically Instagram and Google.
How did you build your audience on social media?
I started building my audience when I realized that most of the people followed and commented on my services and products but didn’t end up getting my services, for that reason my approach changed the way that I communicated. My kickoff was when I started to speak very openly and honestly about people’s fears, doubts, and all kinds of benefits naturally and simply. My best advice for people that are starting is not to worry about having the most perfect Instagram account, just show exactly how they are, be spontaneous and keep the account with content combined with a little bit of yourself, that would create empathy between your audience and your services/products,
