We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Clarissa Fuse-Hemphill. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Clarissa below.
Hi Clarissa, thanks for joining us today. Let’s talk legacy – what sort of legacy do you hope to build?
I’m still building my legacy. But I want people to know start where you are. There is no perfect moment, you have to create your perfect moment. Some individuals may have a silver spoon and it’s easier for them than others. Some individuals start with the bare minimum. But the end goal is to make your dreams a reality. I started with the bare minimum and learned so much along my journey. I have been able to graduate from college twice, ultimately receiving my BA in Sociology and studying psychology, at the University of Missouri St. Louis, UMSL. Became a licensed Realtor in Missouri and Georgia, relocated to a new city, and opened and operate multiple businesses while being married to an awesome husband and loving my kids while motivating and supporting them with their dreams. Make time for the people you love. Don’t limit your life, live your life. And remember GOD can change anybody or any situation, keep your faith, trust, and believe in yourself. Your childhood doesn’t define who you are. You define who you are. Don’t allow others to dictate your life, move with passion, be grateful for what you have, and work towards what you want. I’m teaching my children don’t allow obstacles and barriers to stop their dreams, you can detour but never give up. I’ll continue to strive until my dreams are my reality.

Clarissa , before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
Honestly, I’m blessed to be where I am today. It has been GOD, my faith, determination, hard work, my supportive husband, my kids, and staying true to my vision even when it becomes cloudy. Being in the tax industry wasn’t a dream of mine, I was focused on being a Real Estate agent/ investor. I started doing tax preparation in 2015 after losing my job. I prepared a few tax returns where I rented out a space inside a grocery store. From that point, I met a lot of people, the community, strangers, and others who expressed their gratitude by sending me referrals and speaking highly of my work ethic and problem-solving skills. My clientele started growing before I promoted my business on social media. That’s how I got started.

We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
I remember working in corporate America in 2015, and every time I pulled into the parking lot, I immediately got a headache. I prayed and asked GOD for a better way because I knew my value. I was juggling a full-time job, being a full-time Psychology college student, mother, and wife. I used to attend school on my lunch breaks. My professors couldn’t believe it. One day my job told me I couldn’t do both and I had to choose between school and work. Less than a month later, I was terminated. I thanked my supervisor for their decision because It allowed me to spread my wings. Sometimes a job hinders your ability to elevate. That was my last day working in corporate America. And the launch of Rich Tax Services and Financial.
Another thing my motto is when life gets hard, GO HARDER. I realized while being a business owner life is happening. You have GOOD, BAD, and UGLY moments. The key word it’s a moment and that too shall pass. The hardest times in my business strengthened my character and built my resilience. I remained faithful and believed in myself regardless of the obstacles
I’m the mother of four children 16, 10, 1, and 3 weeks old. With me recently having a baby and operating a business during the prime of tax season is a lot to balance. Having a newborn and a one-year-old is one of the most challenging experiences but it’s a blessing as well. When I found out I was pregnant and my due date was in the prime of tax season I was initially stressed, but It forced me to expand and have my business operate without my presents. I’m a hands-on person and like to be involved every step of the way. I had to trust others and the process of the business to flow smoothly without me. Sometimes things happen in life to push you to the next level.

Any advice for growing your clientele? What’s been most effective for you?
The best way in my opinion to grow your clientele is to be authentically you. Be yourself so you can attract a genuine clientele to your business, and be consistent and welcoming. Continue to educate yourself and your staff. We pride ourselves on integrity. You can’t worry about what other people or businesses in the same industry are doing. Move at your pace and implement strategies to elevate the business, customer satisfaction, and customer service is key. Having a niche is important, so your business can drive in the right direction to pick up the correct clients. Some businesses get overwhelmed with trying to offer every service to an array of clients. We focus on W2 employees and small business owners. We are educated in several areas but over the years our top clients have been identified as both.
