We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Clarence Pearsall. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Clarence below.
Clarence, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. When did you first know you wanted to pursue a creative/artistic path professionally?
I knew I had found my niche as a professional magician a year after I began learning and practicing my skills. In 2015, I went to the Society of American Magicians’ “2015 Chicago Magic Competition” and afterward I made a vow to myself, that I would be a competitor in the next year’s Chicago Magic Competition. I rehearsed several days a week with my mentor until my routine was perfected.
Then in 2016, I entered the “2016 Chicago Magic Competition” and did not win 1st, 2nd, or 3rd place, but I did win the “People’s Choice Award.” To be honest, I believe that the award is more prestigious because it is based on the audience votes and not my magical peers who were judging.
Clarence, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I am Clarence Pearsall III aka C. Magic, an award-winning magician and owner of C. Magic Happen Entertainment, LLC located in the Metro Atlanta area and recipient of the “2023 Best of Atlanta Award” for Magician.
I have been performing magic professionally for over seven years and have the perfect blend of technical skill, humor, and showmanship that will excite and delight all ages.
My style of magical creativity interfuses “old school” and “today’s” music with, mind-blowing magic routines and effects, along with my comedic edge that will have the audiences engaged with laughter, intrigued with his magical shenanigans, and creating moments where the audience will be on the edge of their seats!
Over the years, I have constantly improved my craft by performing at various venues across the country such as corporate events, private parties, birthdays of all ages, gender reveals, weddings, engagements, and community events. I have also performed in Europe, and on television.
If you are in search of something magical to add to your special event whatever it may be, I am confident that I will meet and exceed your expectations as an accomplished comedy magician and entertainer!
Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
As a magician of color, I have found my drive to be fueled by the inconsistencies of equality, the lack of diversity, and self-hate within the world of magic. I am very passionate about changing the dynamics in wanting a fair playing field for all magicians, but it must start with reprogramming their mindset. I have shared the stage with some of the best magicians in the world.
However, when you look at the large magic conferences throughout the United States, magicians of color only represent a minute percent of the performers and lecturers. The other sad equation is that the magicians of color that are showcased are the same old faces out of hundreds of different professional magicians of color. Why is that?
I am on a journey to change the status quo of how professional magicians of color are perceived, remove the politics and have more inclusion in these magic conferences, and magic establishments that will only showcase “two’s and fews” magicians of color. Sadly to say, a few magic establishments are regulated by self-hating magicians of color, who will hire pretty much everyone else, but keep most of the magicians of color on the outside looking in except for the established “old blood” or who they consider will fit their image. Sam Cooke sang, “A Change Is Gonna Come,” and I am doing my best to make sure that change happens!
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
The most rewarding aspect as a magician is to for me is when I go to the Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta-Scottish Rite Hospital and perform my magical shenanigans for the children, their family members, and the staff. Each month I volunteer my service and showcase (2) two shows. Interacting with everyone I can see the impact and accomplishment being made by the smiles on their faces, the reaction to the music, and the fun of assisting me with a trick or two.
