We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Clarence Gordon Jr a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Clarence , looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Before we get into specifics, let’s talk about success more generally. What do you think it takes to be successful?
I believe success takes an unbridled amount of focus, work, and connection. Having a skill is important, how you implement that skill is what counts, and the community you can articulate the value of that skill to.. I can’t really give any anecdotes or stories, being that I’m still on the path to success myself. From what I’ve seen though it seems that persistence, preparation, and patience have always been key factors.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
Hello, my name is Clarence D Gordon Jr aka “BigBizGrizzz” I am a musician/creator/comedian/skateboarder/photographer. I am also the owner of TheGreatOutdoors LLC an idea/creative firm specializing in event coordinating, creative direction, visual arts, idea licensing, and artist management. Making music and visual art is my passion. My mission is to provide community through all my creative endeavors. In order to provide a clear, concise path for the youth to foster their “Ideas” for the betterment of society. I’m just using music, comedy, videography and other mediums of familiarity to do so in my own way. Using creativity to somehow heal the world. Silly yet effective lol.
The thing I’m most proud of is that everything I do is with my close friends and family. I have a community of brilliant individuals who I turn to for any and everything. I want to one day be able to provide that type of community but on a wide scale level. The second thing I’m most proud of is whenever an idea actually works. Big or small. Coming together with people and making something is just something everyone should experience. For that I am proud and also blessed.

What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
The creation. Taking an idea from your mind and bringing it to the physical realm is real life magic.

Is there something you think non-creatives will struggle to understand about your journey as a creative?
They struggle with the concept of the risk. The risk to never make it, to never make a cent from your work, the uncertainty. But to still do it for the love or the passion. I’ve found that most artists have a hard time understanding it too. I was one of those artists for YEARS, then I woke up. It’s exhausting explaining why you dedicate your life to something with little to no reward. The reward is the “Passion” A buddy of mine said to me one day “You gotta remember why you do it and remember nothing else matters” Once I started thinking in that frame of mind things changed. As far as the output and my love for my craft. I’m still a respective nobody, but a nobody who loves his own work.
