We recently connected with Claire Mayer and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Claire, thanks for joining us today. Let’s start with the story of your mission. What should we know?
As an interior designer, it’s more than just dressing people’s homes. Something that is important behind my business and platform is mental health. With having all the mental health issues in our country, we should be feeling our best in our homes. There is a lack of discussion with family, peers, and community around mental health, let’s talk about mental health like we talk about throw pillows and wall color. It’s not just how our home looks, it’s how we feel in our home.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
My business began when I had a 19-month-old and a newborn as my mommy hobby. I started making coasters and painting vases, which lead to chalk painting furniture, and eventually grew into the love I have for thrift stores and finding beautiful pieces for my clients at the perfect price.
Now, here we are, I’m a mama of three beautiful girls. No longer just having a hobby but a mission to combine my passion for people and projects into the perfect harmony that is Claire Mayer Design. I am passionate about my commitment to quality, which is why I have an entire team of professionals behind me to bring our vision of your home to life. It’s time to make your home more than just a physical spot on the map but a feeling in your heart.
Each and every passion I have, always begins with people! People like you. I adore hearing people’s stories, have a knack for being part of people’s homes, and I simply love holding people in their joy and in their tears! I love it all. I truly believe serving others through creating joyful spaces and cultivating new stories is my gift to the world!
With the amount of time we are spending in our homes, there is no project too small or too large. Functionality is at the forefront of every space I design, because when your home is functional for your family, it naturally brings out the beauty in the space. When functionality and beauty are achieved you will feel less overwhelmed and more relaxed in your home.
How about pivoting – can you share the story of a time you’ve had to pivot?
I had to pivot when I decided to upscale my business. My kids were getting older and in school full time, which meant I didn’t have to plan my jobs around when my kids were in bed. I knew I wanted to make more money and work more outside of the home. As my kids grew, so did my business.
I’d paint pieces for people and they would say it doesn’t look the same in their house as it does mine. I would suggest changing color schemes in the room, decor, furniture, and rugs, to up level the piece they had me paint for them. This was turning into full room makeovers. I had built up this clientele for 5 years and slowly started realizing this was a need in my area. I’ve been sending links to people for years and helping them order pieces for their spaces and virtually designing and styling before I even turned it into profitable income.
To get where I am now it required me to bring my services down, build a team, and network to find experts in their respective fields. Now I have a dream team of contractors who I work with on all of my projects.
We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
The life shifting lesson I had to learn is saying no more often and saying sorry less, I actually have a full blog post on this exact topic. I never said no, I always said yes. Anytime anyone asked anything of me, I’d quickly say yes and rearrange my entire day. I knew that was bringing other people joy, and I didn’t want to let them down, but it wasn’t serving me. Myself, my kids, and my husband were being prioritized last.
The whole point of having your own business is accommodating you and your family first, but none of that was happening for me. I was doing the opposite. I finally got to the place where I had had enough. Since making the shift of having my family and I at the forefront, my business is soaring because my mental health is so much better.
