We were lucky to catch up with Claire Dunn recently and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Claire thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. We’d love to hear the backstory behind a risk you’ve taken – whether big or small, walk us through what it was like and how it ultimately turned out.
Before arriving to the US, in the past years I did a series of adventures by myself, with only a backpack and a tent, following signs and intuition. I explored many countries, mountains, woods, deserts, rivers, and much more. I’ve been following my path without a plan, following signs, getting to know myself on a very, very deep level. There was a lot of risk-taking involved. I hitchhiked many times. If I hadn’t done all of that, my career wouldn’t be where it is today. Being in the present moment and really sharpening my intuition is the right place for me.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I am an artist, a psychologist, art therapist and a curator. Growing up in Argentina, I was always involved in creative projects and loved studying the relationships between the human mind and the arts. I am a traveler too, which originated in my nomadic lifestyle from an early age. My work aims to enable connections with the people and the environment that I am in through a constellation of different materials and mediums; ranging from sculptures and paintings to experimental photography, multimedia installation and invented tools. I recently started reconnecting with Jewellery making, I am creating wearable talismans. I also facilitate art-nature walks. I designed a class where there is a mixture of outdoor meditation, community art-making and different activities that re-connects us to the forest.
Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
My installations aim to immerse viewers in a contemplative exploration of human connection to nature, spirituality, and the sacred amidst urban environments. By integrating natural and urban materials, my sculptures seek to ground the frequencies of purity and balance within city living. The wisdom of the natural world elevates and transforms my materials and ideas in a way that reflects the alchemical processes of life. The artwork endeavors to breathe life into the mundane, emphasizing the primacy of intuition over intellect, connecting you with the sacredness of our interconnected existence. My work bridges different realms and perspectives, whether it’s the material and celestial, the human and natural, or the visible and invisible, walking on the edges of time, inviting people to engage with the world around them in a more mindful and meaningful way.
Are there any books, videos or other content that you feel have meaningfully impacted your thinking?
I read about everything. From astronomy, to geology, metaphysics, mythology, fairytales and fantasy books, psychology-related texts, philosophy, history, and more. I think being curious and learning about our past and present will help us shape our future. Women who run with the wolves by Clarissa Pinkola Estes is a book that I love.
