We recently connected with CJ Ballin and have shared our conversation below.
CJ, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Earning a full time living from one’s creative career can be incredibly difficult. Have you been able to do so and if so, can you share some of the key parts of your journey and any important advice or lessons that might help creatives who haven’t been able to yet?
I only realized four years ago that music would be something that I would love to do full-time because I love seeing people get lost in the melody. At first, I just posted a couple of songs to SoundCloud. I started distributing my music to music platforms and marketing through social media. Right now I am attending open mics and booking venues in Denver to create more of a local audience that is in tune with my music.

CJ, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
My music is all mine. I either find copyright-free loops and sample them into creating a beat. In the process, I create my drums, vocals, and effects. Where some people have a producer and multiple people creating the music in this case it is just me. I think self production is what sets me apart from a majority of the musicians in this day in age.

Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
In 2020 my Dad passed away, at the time I was only 18. I am an only child and my dad was like my best friend and looking back you never see things that are going to happen in foresight. It was difficult to get through college but it also gave me the strength and confidence to start making music because you only have so many days to make an impact.
What can society do to ensure an environment that’s helpful to artists and creatives?
I think having open spaces where artists can perfect their craft is something that creates a great ecosystem for artists. Society is going to continue moving but adapting to the culture of music is very important in this scenario.
