We were lucky to catch up with Cipri recently and have shared our conversation below.
Cipri, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Are you happy as a creative professional? Do you sometimes wonder what it would be like to work for someone else?
I am happy as an artist and a creative person in general. I actually have a masters degree in linguistics, so studying language and music (they’re in the same part of the brain) was always intertwined for me. I have had dozens of jobs and my resume/CV is probably longer than most people’s (4 pages!) but I prefer to work on my craft and skills as an singer songwriter and artist. I have worked as a linguist with my degree, and while it is satisfying, it’s not the path where my soul feels at home or most content.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
I am a recording artist signed with Bentley Records. I got into the industry in 2012 when I signed as a songwriter for BMI (Broadcast Music Inc). In 2020 I signed with Bentley Records and the label is absolutely phenomenal. It is everything I have ever wanted in a record label.
I am honored to say I am on an album with Gucci Mane. The album with Gucci Mane (Miungu Ya Muziki) charted on Apple Music Reggae charts in Ukraine, Russia, Sri Lanka, the Netherlands, and Ghana. On the Amazon charts, Miungu Ya Muziki hit charts in Italy, Spain, Germany and France. Finally, on the iTunes Charts the album reached #2 for reggae albums in the United States, and #31 on the main iTunes Charts.
I then released a single titled “Woke” and to my surprise, it received a ton of positive feedback.
Finally, this year I released a song “Rendezvous” on the Arcane Music Compilation. It reached #1 on the hiphop and rap albums in Belgium on Belgium iTunes, and #3 for overall albums in Belgium.
I am looking forward to charting in more countries and more success with my songs!
We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
Well, this year actually I would say I was pretty resilient. I found out that someone had paid and tried to register a trademark on my name (CIPRI) in its use in music. Needless to say, I filed an opposition to the trademark immediately and then I had to learn the rules of trademark law! It took me nearly 4 months of studying legal texts and cases, but I won the case because I have first use.
Alright – so here’s a fun one. What do you think about NFTs?
I think NFT’s are part of the future and it’s really only a matter of time before we see them integrated into everything!
