We recently connected with CINDY WRIGHT and have shared our conversation below.
Hi CINDY, thanks for joining us today. Can you open up about a risk you’ve taken – what it was like taking that risk, why you took the risk and how it turned out?
While working in and for “non-profit organizations” at the beginning of my working career, I went on to work for “for-profit organizations” afterwards. An experience I wouldn’t change for anything. Raising money to help the less fortunate to raising money for businesses that sold products and services to consumers. It ran the gament in fostering my ability to sell. Eventually, after leaving those businesses and gaining respect from contacts and liaisons, they began to ask me to help them with their events. Being loyal to my employers, I didn’t “take the bait” right away but the seed was planted and I tested the water and realized I could this on my own. A few years down the road, I left my employers and started CWright Services, a Promotion, Marketing and Event Planning Company. Those contacts I gained over the years, opened other doors that opened my eyes to other talents buried from my high school days and early ambitions. From the Fashion Industry to the Entertainment Industry (Music, Radio, TV) that made me and CWright Services sought after in these industries.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
As mentioned earlier, it’s important to note that you never know where or how your talents may benefit others. My ability to “sell” gave me the opportunity to sell myself, sell to others and for others. As a Promotion, Marketing and Event Planning person, always wanting to help, helped me secure clients in the Fashion Industry first from attending Fashion Industries High School in New York. I made my own clothes, worked for Designers, Coordinating their Shows and Marketing their lines to Customers, Boutiques and Retail outlets. Of course Promotion kicked in that put me in situations where Marketing opened doors to meeting and interacting with celebrities in the Music, TV and Radio industries. Some clients became friends who referred me to their friends. As a “seasoned” entrepreneur with determination and drive, I have never lost sight of my upbringing, work ethic and desire to work “behind the scenes” to watch my clients and my vision come to fruition. I’ve worked for and with some of the folks that you may be familiar with that first started out in their fields like FUBU, Sean Jean, Baby Phat, etc., Before that, worked for German Educational TV where I started as a Receptionist, then Executive Assistant and Production Assistant to Director of Marketing. Later on they hired me to work at their Radio Station as Sales Manager and Office Manager in upstate New York. Years later returning to New York City, I was hired to work for a prominent Non-Profit organization, first as Executive Assistant and Office Manager to Director of Urban Affairs and Hip Hop, coupled with Event Planning their events throughout 8 satellite offices in the country. Working with non-profits, you take on many roles. That’s where I was able to solicit and secure celebrities to help us raise funds for the organization. Those fostered relationships, over a 10 year period, where some of those same celebrities went on to become friends and then clients to CWright Services.

We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
Resilience seems to be my life story, coming from a family of 9 and growing up on Social Services. Being the oldest girl, helping to raise my siblings, I wanted more for myself and had hoped to bring my siblings along. Those were aspirations of a 7 year old little girl who watched television and wanted to be someone in that industry. Thank God for an aunt who wa a school teacher and helped my divorced mom weather the storm of raising her kids. She sent me to Charm School at 13 years old, where I road the subway downtown Manhattan to the Ed Sullivan theatre where my classes were held. How exciting was this for a little black girl from the South Bronx. I think that was the first time I really felt that anything was possible. Television I think, opened my eyes to a whole other world outside of my own and I couldn’t, wouldn’t let anything stop any of my dreams, even if I stumbled along the way.

How about pivoting – can you share the story of a time you’ve had to pivot?
Well, I guess the time I had to “pivot” from my original dream of becoming a Designer, came into play when I realized that I couldn’t afford to pursue that career because of financial restraints and went to Business School to pursue a career as a Secretary/Executive Assistant. After finding a job with a non-profit organization in that field, I realized, from my humble beginnings that I wanted to help the less fortunate like myself. While working for those non-profits, my ability to sell and fundraise for those organizations, I was able to work, create and show my ability and communication skills. I started getting promoted to positions that honed these skills and went on to raise thousands, maybe millions for these organizations. My ability to create programs and events that raised money for these organizations gave me the opportunity meet, socialize, gain relationships and friendships with celebrities and business folks that started to recognize my abilities and ask that I do their events. That was the beginning of me starting my own Promotion, Marketing and Event Planning Company CWright Services.
