We recently connected with Cindy Williams and have shared our conversation below.
Cindy, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. We’d love to have you retell us the story behind how you came up with the idea for your business, I think our audience would really enjoy hearing the backstory.
I love Texas! Through conversations, I realized that many Texans don’t really know about the different cultures and regions that make up our state. For instance, I’m of Wendish descent on my mother’s side (what’s a Wend?) and noodles, coffee cake, and thriftiness are a part of my DNA! I know that certain foods and customs are also part of the many ethnicities that formed Texas as well as the regions in which we live.
I feel its so important to document these customs and foods that have been handed down through the generations.
To date, I have interviewed and prepared dishes with those of Vietnamese, Lebanese, African American, German, Spanish, Mexican, French, and cowboy connections. I’ve also been able to prepare dishes that allow us to be adventuresome: Cooking in an RV and meal prepping.
Above all, this has been so much fun and and my guests are ordinary people with a passion for their uniqueness.
Cindy, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
Texicureans celebrates the diversity of Texas culture and cuisine.
Me and my niece Emily Williams bring viewers along with us into the kitchens of ordinary Texans as they share their extraordinary traditions of food and family.
Texicureans goes beyond the Texas staples of brisket and Tex-Mex for a culinary journey into Texas history, cultural diversity, and rich traditions in the Lone Star State.
I am the most proud when we finish filming a cooking segment, that everyone has had a great time together in the kitchen. I have watch eyes light up when guests enthusiastically share their recipes and the history associated with them.
I also ask my guests: What do you love about being a Texan? The answers are as varied as the guests and their enthusiasm for being a Texan is always contagious.
Any insights you can share with us about how you built up your social media presence?
Social Media, for me, has been like drinking through a fire hose! I’m still in intense learning mode. I read, watch, and study other successful people. For all practical purposes, I’ve moved from kindergarten to about middle school – which means I have so much more to learn!
The absolute best action I have taken is to hire a friend who has experience and is willing to teach me with patience. We actually have a lot of fun together, brainstorming posts. We spend about 2 1/2 hours a week dedicated to social media.
Having a mentor has been a game changer. Social media is what allows me to be in this realm – so it is my biggest opportunity. It’s also the area which I’m weakest. My passion for this project keeps me learning and tackling the challenges connected with it.
Can you tell us the story behind how you met your business partner?
When I first envisioned Texicureans, I really wanted someone who could share the journey with me. I knew it would be more fun, and the idea of bouncing ideas off of each other was enticing. (I can brainstorm best that way!)
My niece, Emily Williams and I were together for Easter and she started taking pictures of food to share on Social Media. It was like I was looking at her with new eyes! We are a family that prepares and orchestrates food for our gatherings and she had clearly inherited that trait!
This is a side-hustle for her, but we have so enjoyed our time together. She brings a uniqueness to Texicureans with her age, her urban living, and her perspective on cuisine.
