Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Cindy Jones. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Cindy, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Let’s start
with a story that highlights an important way in which your brand diverges
from the industry standard.
We make natural skin care products. I’ve had some potential customers tell me that they will not buy natural skincare products because they just do not work or they grow mold on them. To us, making natural, sustainable skin care products that work is very important. My background in biochemistry has given me the knowledge to really understand the nature of skin as well as ingredients and what ingredients best benefit skin. Colorado Aromatics Cultivated skin care products are scientifically made to combine beneficial medicinally herbs with active ingredients made by green chemistry. These products are effective to minimize dry skin, hyperpigmentation, redness &
irritation and reduce the appearance of wrinkles. Your skin barrier function plays an important role in your overall health and we design
our products to optimize its work and to protect it from damage. Our complete line includes: face care, body care, bath/shower products and hand crafted soaps.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
My path to being a cosmetic formulator is a windy road. I started my career in cancer research, followed by teaching and medical writing. All the while I was developing a passion for herbs and wanted to do something that highlighted the medical effectiveness of these powerful plants. I began a hobby making various things with herbs and realized how much I enjoyed it. Not only that, I realized that I could make some powerful products that were not available on the market..
The main thing that sets Colorado Aromatics apart from other brands is that they are formulated by a biochemist and herbalist. We are also the growers and grow 30 or ore different herbs on our farm to use in these products. Our farm is Certified Naturally Grown so we use no herbicides or pesticides and pay particular attention to soil health and the ecosystem. By growing herbs, we want people to appreciate how important farms are.
Things that I am proud of; earning a Ph.D. in biochemistry, formulating over 30 products for our own line, as well as formulating many products for other lines, being a leader in the farm to skin movement, educating others on the properties and uses of herbs, being a founding member of the United States Lavender Growers Association and graduating from the Goldman Sachs 10,000 Small Businesses Program in 2021. Taking this business class really helped me focus my energies on my business to help it grow.
We’d really appreciate if you could talk to us about how you figured out
the manufacturing process.
Yes, we manufacture all of our products. This is something I should have addressed previously. Making the product has always been a passion of mine. Maybe it’s because I am a control freak but I do like telling customers that we truly control the quality of the product from seed to skin. Having a chemistry background has certainly helped with learning how to make these products. Transitioning a batch from a small research batch to a larger batch is always a challenge as it is never quite the same and adjustments have to be made. We have invested in tools to be able to produce larger batches. Besides this, we also have contracts with other skincare companies to formulate as well as make their products. This has always given our bottom line a little cushion.

Does your business have multiple or supplementary revenue streams (like a ATM machine at a barbershop, etc)?
Yes, we have some multiple revenue streams that I mentioned above. Besides
making Colorado Aromatics Cultivated Skincare products we have developed
relationships with other brands. We formulate and manufacture products for
several other brands. This has helped us grow and it’s always interesting
to formulate different products. I also teach some classes on our
herb/lavender farm and also have participated in some online teaching
platforms. I do enjoy stepping back from the day to day to be able to teach
and pass on some hopefully useful information. Education is part of our
core values.
