We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Cindy Gelormini. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Cindy below.
Cindy, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. One of the toughest things about progressing in your creative career is that there are almost always unexpected problems that come up – problems that you often can’t read about in advance, can’t prepare for, etc. Have you had such and experience and if so, can you tell us the story of one of those unexpected problems you’ve encountered?
I have had to reinvent myself several times. 1) After having kids wanting to be self-employed so i started painting murals and faux finishes. 2) Years later the faux finishes were going out of style, so I went to work as a designer in a paint store. 3) When many of my clients were either buying or selling a home I decided to get my real estate license. 4) When the store I worked for went out of business I went out on my own as an independent color consultant and then wrote a book on how to choose paint colors. 5) After my autistic son went to heaven I wrote and illustrated an children’s book series and now do school assemblies, have a podcast and started a foundation to help other autism families.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I started out painting the mirrored walls for the holidays in a health club which led to painting murals, then later faux finishes. Later I became an in-store designer in a paint store and ended up becoming an expert in my field as a color consultant and paint color expert. I have worked with tens of thousands of clients helping them choose paint colors. I take away all of the stress of paint color selection! Everything I’ve learned over the years I have put into my book “The Paint Diva Method”. Recently I came out of mural retirement to paint a large outdoor mural in my home town.
You can learn all about what I do for autism and as the Paint Diva on my websites.

Is there something you think non-creatives will struggle to understand about your journey as a creative? Maybe you can provide some insight – you never know who might benefit from the enlightenment.
Everything I do is self-taught. Non-Creatives want to know how I learned how to do what I do. It’s not something you go to school for. It was just a process of learning and getting better over time. You can’t teach someone to become creative or how to have natural talent. :)

What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
In my line of work I help people all day. I take away their stress, make them happy and feeling relieved. I like making people happy. My clients are people who have a hard time visualizing their homes in a different way. They are afraid of color and afraid of making mistakes. They are always amazed and what I do and so quickly and easily. I answer them and say “Well, don’t ask me to do math!” :)
