We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Cindy & Christina Hardin-weiss. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Cindy & Christina below.
Cindy & Christina, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. We’d love to hear about how you went about setting up your own practice and if you have any advice for professionals who might be considering starting their own?
On the way back from my mom’s house for Christmas, Cindy and I discussed the frequently asked questions we received from our family caregivers while working as home health rehabilitation therapists. We realized that it would be helpful to create educational videos that answered these questions and post them on YouTube. We could then set up our clients and their families on a computer to watch the videos while we completed the paperwork.
We noticed that we were getting traction on YouTube videos, so in 2018, we decided to turn it into a subscription-based business. We designed a website and a video platform to organize the over 200 videos we produced. Our platform went live in January 2020. Currently, we offer subscription access to the AECorner video library to family caregivers, senior caregivers, professional caregivers, and companies and organizations that provide services to seniors and caregivers.
One thing Cindy and I would have done differently would have been to take business classes while getting our undergraduate degrees.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
During our careers as home health therapists, we became aware that our patients’ caregivers were struggling physically and were having difficulty caring for their loved ones. We understood that family caregivers’ primary goal was to ensure loved ones remained safe and happy at home as long as possible. We also understood that many times, this goal could be achieved by simply having the right tools. Adaptive Equipment & Caregiving Corner was created to help raise awareness of adaptive equipment that will help caregivers work smarter and safer and help individuals looking for information regarding how to help their loved ones safely age in place.
At Adaptive Equipment and Caregiving Corner, we believe caregivers deserve the best tools and resources to provide top-notch care. That’s why we created Adaptive Equipment & Caregiving Corner, a one-stop destination for all our viewers’ adaptive equipment and caregiving needs.
Whether the viewer is an individual living independently at home, a family caregiver, or a healthcare professional, we are here to support them on their journey.
Our educational videos and adaptive equipment demonstrations show our viewers how to use the latest tools and techniques to enhance safety and comfort.
We understand that caregiving can be challenging, which is why we’ve created a comprehensive video library that includes a Caregiver Support Series, a Home Safety ToolKit Series, a Preparing for Knee Replacement Surgery Series, and a Preparing for Hip Replacement Surgery Series, all to make our viewers’ lives easier.
Our website offers a wealth of information, including caregiver resources, reviews of adaptive equipment, and an online shop for helpful products.
So, if our viewers need help finding the right adaptive equipment or want to learn effective caregiving techniques, https://www.AECorner.com is here to assist them.
Cindy and I are proud of the communities we have built on YouTube, TikTok, Instagram, LinkedIn and Facebook.
We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
Cindy and I are proud of our work in building an online community through Adaptive Equipment & Caregiving Corner. We started on YouTube in 2015 and even joined TikTok in 2021. What we do isn’t sexy. We can’t afford to give away cars or money. We won’t ever step into a ring to fight Mike Tyson. Our videos won’t ever go viral. But we’re not here to dazzle with flash or glamour. Instead, we want to do something more impactful: help people live their best lives. By raising awareness of helpful adaptive equipment and compassionate caregiving, we want to empower seniors, family caregivers, and individuals with disabilities and help them understand how to maintain their independence and dignity. At Adaptive Equipment & Caregiving Corner, we are about making a real difference, one person at a time. As John Wesley said, ‘Do all the good you can, by all the means you can…’ and that’s precisely what we strive to do.
Other than training/knowledge, what do you think is most helpful for succeeding in your field?
Rehabilitation therapists need to know their value. We possess unique clinical skills, interpersonal abilities, and unwavering dedication that extend far beyond productivity metrics. We are more than technicians; we are artists who sculpt recovery, shaping each patient’s journey with individualized care. As educators, we translate complex medical information into understandable terms, empowering our patients to make informed decisions about their treatment. As cheerleaders, we foster a positive mindset, celebrating progress, no matter how small, and inspiring patients to persevere through challenges. And as caregivers, we provide a compassionate presence, offering solace, understanding, and unwavering support, creating a therapeutic alliance that accelerates healing.
