Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Cindy Aguilar. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Cindy, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. What did your parents do right and how has that impacted you in your life and career?
One of the biggest advantages I had is the unwavering support of both my parents. Growing up in an immigrant household, the values of hard work and seizing opportunities were ingrained in us. My parents always held high expectations for my brother and me—going to college and earning a degree were a given. Despite taking a different path, they believed in me. Introducing the idea of attending beauty school and starting my own business was daunting, as I feared disappointing my parents. My older brother, a first-generation graduate with degrees in criminology and psychology from UCI, set a certain expectation. Yet, when I decided to take the leap and pursue my passion, I took charge. Realizing that traditional schooling wasn’t for me, I explored options, selected the best affordable school on the same day, paid the deposit, and then informed my parents. They had no choice but to stand by me. Working to fund my education, I was 18 at the time. I told myself it was time to either establish my foundation or fail and start again. As you can see, failure wasn’t the outcome.
My parents witnessed firsthand the depth of my commitment to pursuing my education and venturing into my limitless business possibilities. They supported me by enabling me to work from home, being my models for school, coming with me to events when necessary, and more. When the time came to establish my own space, their encouragement reached new heights. They participated by assisting in the setup, painting, decorating, and transforming it into a welcoming environment for my clients.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
My brand covers more than just providing eyebrow waxing—it symbolizes quality, authenticity, and the essence of embracing one’s natural beauty. It stands as a safe environment where individuals can be themselves, enhance their features, and feel confident. This space isn’t limited to women; it’s inclusive for anyone seeking to feel good and self-assured. Within these walls, people can find solace—whether it’s a place to unwind, share laughter, cry, talk, rest, or simply exist.
My aspiration was to channel kindness and knowledge into the world, and what better avenue than to offer a service that spreads positivity and uplifts people’s days. Reflecting on my own upbringing, I understood the hesitation that comes when entrusting someone with the task of enhancing our unique features. This shared fear among my clients of trying a new service provider drove me to empathize and prioritize their experience, striving to surpass their expectations in every possible way.
Any advice for growing your clientele? What’s been most effective for you?
The most effective strategy I’ve found for expanding my client base is through word-of-mouth referrals. The value of being recommended by someone you trust is immeasurable. In the early stages, I offered numerous free services to establish my clientele. Trust plays an important role, especially in businesses that involve sensitive aspects like people’s time, money, and appearance. Building recognition around who you are is crucial, and giving away some services for free, particularly at the start, is how I launched my business.
Establishing a strong relationship with your clients is a priority. This connection is central for maintaining a steady business and retaining your clientele. Following that, the use of social media and refining your brand identity within that is essential. I discovered that sharing educational content on social media is beneficial. It not only showcases your expertise but also emphasizes the trust you’re building with potential clients.
Are there any books, videos, essays or other resources that have significantly impacted your management and entrepreneurial thinking and philosophy?
One of my favorite pastimes is reading books and enjoying podcasts during my free time, so this question resonates with me. A book I truly wish I had discovered earlier is “Your Money or Your Life” by Vicky Robin and Joe Dominguez. It dives into the relationship we have with money and offers insights into how to establish a healthy connection with it. As one’s income increases, the need to manage money thoughtfully becomes crucial. It’s surprisingly easy to make simple errors when faced with larger sums, especially at a young age or when encountering substantial amounts for the first time. It’s unfortunate that schools often neglect to teach the significance of these skills, even though they’re vital for navigating adulthood. This book is a great resource for filling in those gaps. Some podcasts I enjoy on daily basis are: On Purpose with Jay Shetty and The Tony Robbins Podcast. If you are into astrology, Astrology of the Week Ahead with Chani Nicholas is a great way to start your week and navigate accordingly.
