Cierra, appreciate you joining us today. How did you come up with the idea for your business?

The Care Bear Foundation likely originated from a shared passion and commitment to making a positive impact on the lives of individuals impacted by incarceration. Perhaps, during your husband’s incarceration, both of you recognized the need for holistic support services that address the diverse needs of individuals reentering society. Together, you may have brainstormed ideas for programs and initiatives that could empower individuals to rebuild their lives, access resources, and achieve their goals. Drawing from personal experiences, insights, and a desire to give back to the community, the vision for The Care Bear Foundation likely took shape, with a focus on holistic approaches to mental health, financial empowerment, and legal advocacy. Your husband’s perspective from within the correctional system and your experiences outside likely provided valuable insights into the challenges faced by individuals impacted by incarceration, informing the organization’s mission and goals. Working together, you both may have developed a strategic plan for launching and operating The Care Bear Foundation, leveraging your combined skills, knowledge, and resources to create positive change in your community.

Hello, I’m Cierra Cobb, an entrepreneur and advocate deeply involved in both for-profit and non-profit ventures. As the founder of Cobb Advisory LLC and the Care Bear Foundation, my journey into this industry began with advocacy for my husband, Jeffrey Cobb, who was wrongfully charged with a crime. This personal experience sparked my passion for justice and led me to expand my efforts to advocate for the incarcerated population, focusing on fair treatment, medical neglect, and improving overall prison conditions. Additionally, through my podcast, the Black Light Mass Incarceration Show, I aim to shed light on issues within the criminal justice system. My dedication to these causes stems from a desire to ensure fairness, equality, and compassion for all individuals, both inside and outside of prison walls.

We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.

I encountered a case where a man was unjustly charged with capital murder, despite the state having no substantial evidence against him. The prospect of a life sentence without parole loomed over him. Determined to ensure he wasn’t wrongfully convicted, I partnered with his attorney, both of us unwavering in our belief in his innocence.

I immersed myself in the case, attending numerous hearings, conducting interviews with family members, and organizing press conferences to humanize him in the public eye. My goal was to highlight the systemic issues of false charges, particularly within marginalized communities in North Carolina.

However, the state prosecutor attempted to silence me by adding me as a witness and thus barring me from the courtroom during the trial. Undeterred, I maneuvered around this obstacle, showing up in support during the trial’s final days.

Despite the state’s persistence, the trial ended in a mistrial due to the jury’s inability to reach a unanimous decision on his guilt. Undeterred, the state proceeded with a second trial, yet I remained steadfast in my advocacy.

As the second trial commenced, the state eventually reached a deal with the accused, a deal he couldn’t refuse. Through my relentless advocacy, I believe I played a pivotal role in preventing an innocent man from facing a life sentence for a crime he did not commit. This experience underscores my unwavering commitment to fighting for justice and fairness within the legal system.
