We were lucky to catch up with Ciara Cusseaux recently and have shared our conversation below.
Ciara, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. We’d love to hear about a project that you’ve worked on that’s meant a lot to you.
For me, the most meaningful project has been wedding photography. Initially, I was drawn to photography through its storytelling abilities and the beauty and art of it that I saw in 90’s editorials, fashion magazines, and artwork. After experiencing wedding photography, due to requests from family and friends, I was captivated by all the elements that come together to create a wedding day. It’s become a long-term and satisfying study and celebration of love and connection. Wedding photography allows me to explore the raw, unscripted emotions of life. It’s about capturing a day that’s significant not just for its beauty, but for its representation of a deep, enduring connection. It’s a project that never gets old because each couple brings their own unique narrative of love, making my work an endless exploration of the most beautiful of all human experiences – love.

Ciara, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I provide destination couples getting married in Mexico and Southern California with photography and wedding films, as well as album design for those who want to relive their day through a tangible experience. Another particularly special offering is the anniversary shoot, which holds a special place in my heart. It’s an homage to ongoing love that reflects on a couple’s shared life together, and how their relationship has flourished and endured.
I’ve always been captivated by the storytelling power of photography. Flipping through the pages of books and magazines, I was drawn to editorial work, photojournalism, and art. This is what drew me into photography – the way a single photo could say so much. I aim to capture these narratives, from the deepest emotions and major highlights to the quiet, unnoticed moments.
A common concern among couples is feeling awkward in front of the camera. My solution is to guide them through their portrait session with simple directions and fun activities. This approach helps them relax, allowing genuine, candid moments to naturally occur.
I balance candid photography with beautifully composed portraits to capture the essence of a couple’s relationship, their personal interests, and personalities, which are what drew them to each other and their memories of the wedding day itself. I want potential clients to know that when they choose me, they’re not just getting a photographer; they’re getting someone dedicated to telling their love story in a way that is true to them.

For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
The most rewarding aspect of being a creative is the fulfillment of the classic adage of doing what I love. I recall it being expressed this way: If you truly love doing something, you will do it regardless of the circumstances. Much like a singer who can sing alone in their room or in front of thousands in an audience, they sing simply because they love to. I am in a field that has captivated me since childhood. My dream of growing up and maintaining this passion in my life has come true, and reflecting on Little Ciara, I know I have made her proud, which is immensely satisfying.
I get to use this creativity not only as an outlet for myself but also as a means to share with others, providing a source of joy. It’s a service that evokes emotional responses in people and fosters a sense of connection and inspiration. This provides a sense of fulfillment to my career, making every moment of my creative process even more meaningful.

What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
I aim to lead a life that prioritizes people and inspires others to do the same. I firmly believe in the importance of relationships, which is why I cherish having a career that not only embraces, but actively celebrates this notion of connection. It’s about fostering and highlighting the significance of human bonds. My work involves and exalts the idea of interpersonal relationships, emphasizing and rejoicing in the deep connections we share with others.
