We were lucky to catch up with Chynita Garrett recently and have shared our conversation below.
Chynita, appreciate you joining us today. We’d love to have you retell us the story behind how you came up with the idea for your business, I think our audience would really enjoy hearing the backstory.
So just to rewind back to the early 2000s I had my first experience with getting my nails done and it was something that I always loved. During my years of grade school I was extremely horrible in art class and with that I just told myself doing nails is something that I could never do so I never tried. I’ve always encouraged others that nails is a good way to be creative and also make a very good living for yourself. Back in April of 2022 I purchased a few basic nail items from Amazon and just put them to the side. Finally in June of that year I opened up the nail items I purchased and it’s just been love ever since. I always prayed and asked God to reveal to me something that I can do with my hands and he blessed me with the ability to create art using nails. Of course in the beginning everyone’s work isn’t ideal but from the beginning my work has been pretty decent and it’s just been so easy for me to learn different techniques and be able to just grow in my craft.

Chynita, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I really got into the nail industry by just taking a chance on myself and stopped telling myself I couldn’t do something before I even tried. I never imagined I would be able to create art on such tiny canvases. And the funny thing about that is if you give me pen and paper I still can’t draw anything close to being recognizable. That truly still amazes me. As someone who has just engulfed myself into the world of nails this is a topic I can talk about forever. I haven’t been in this industry too long but I have learned a lot and I feel that is due to just how I am as a person but also because I take my craft very serious and I have put in countless hours of practice and have dedicated myself to learning things on my own. I find so much joy helping other nail techs or even those who are the diy’ers improve on their work. Whether it’s product recommendations, simple to intricate nail art, tutorials, services and etc I can help with it all. During my journey so far I am very pleased with myself with how I have dedicated myself so deeply in my work. I push myself to the limit and that has helped me to become more independent with my inspirations and that is very important as an artist. I also truly enjoy the reaction when I am done doing my clients nails or one of my customers receives their custom press on nails and they are just filled with joy and excitement. That is really a great feeling. When thinking of my current clients and my future clients I want them to know and understand that I am here to contribute to their confidence and want them to know it’s all about you. My happiness comes from seeing how I am able to make them feel good and I’ll do all I can to make that happen. I also want other nail techs that DesignXscape Nail Studio is a safe place. My goal is to help build up others when it comes to their work so in return they can give their clients the best results. It’s so important to be able to have someone you can depend on to help you when needed, give you correct advice, help you improve your work and to just really give you words of encouragement because the nail world can be frustrating for some because it really isn’t easy and it is very costly trying to acquire all the products you need to create these endless looks.

Have you ever had to pivot?
For anyone that has started a business then how difficult things can be when you are starting. I used to look to the left and right to see what other people were doing in my industry because at one point I was clueless. All I knew was I like doing nails but I had no direction. It’s like the things I wanted to do the audience I actually reached it didn’t resonate with them too much. However I did notice that my short tutorials were liked more. Now that’s not to say that I can’t do both but it’s like if the people that are interacting with you have a preference over the other things you do then it just makes sense to give them more content that they hold valuable. This is why I really like to focus on nail tutorials and in touch on basic education as well.

Can you talk to us about manufacturing? How’d you figure it all out? We’d love to hear the story.
The two products that I currently have are custom nail sets and I am actually in the process of digital products. I create and make everything on my own so it’s a lot. Producing the custom nails was pretty easy from the start but some challenges did come with that as well. Finding quality nails as well as proper sizing is really the most challenging part when it comes to creation. There is a learning curve as well when you are working with different products because you don’t always know the outcomes and that is difficult. In the past I’ve made digital products before but not to this extent. I am working on some new digital projects and it has been a lot navigating it but I take joy in learning new things and figuring out how to get things complete. Some things that I’ve learned is to not overwhelm yourself because everything can’t be done in one day, enjoy your process no matter how hard it can be, and if you need help just ask for it.
