We were lucky to catch up with Chumika Williams recently and have shared our conversation below.

Chumika, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. We’d love to have you retell us the story behind how you came up with the idea for your business, I think our audience would really enjoy hearing the backstory.

The beginning of RetwistedbyMeek will always remain as a moment I’ll never forget. Knowing that I actually took a life changing risk, will always be an intense exciting feeling for me. RetwistedbyMeek all started in 2021 while I was working for my previous job, that I was employed at for 4 years as a supervisor. I had step down as a supervisor and accepted a new position, that included a set schedule from 4am-12:30pm. I was extremely excited about the schedule, downside this position did require a lot more physical work. But hey! It wasn’t to much for a woman like me (LOL). I was so happy with this schedule, it was able to give me more time with my family and become a little more flexible with my personal life. Once the position set in and I became adjusted, I use to come straight home and just go to sleep from all the physicality. After 3 months of working this position and just coming home to go to sleep. I was over being unproductive, knowing I have extra time on my hands. So I began to think of different ideas to bring in extra income, which is way better than just coming home to go to sleep. Ideas would run across my mind, but I couldn’t think of anything that I knew would stick. Until I actually started paying attention, to how many people would ask me “who does your Locs? “ I would always reply; “ I do my own hair,”. Then they’ll ask; Do you do Locs?” And I will say “No I don’t” . Then one day the light bulb went off and I got the bright idea “I’m going to do Locs”….like duh! This should have already been in rotations right! But timing could have never been better. I have been turning away to many potential clients. See I’ve always loved to do hair, but never quit knew what kind of hair I wanted to do, so I took a chance. I started off with getting into loc groups on Facebook, posting my work and prices. This helped out a lot, being able to showcase my work where it’s needed. Secondly I passed out business cards, passing out business cards provided an one on one interaction with a potential clients. While thirdly, I made an instagram page for my business. Instagram is now a major platform for entrepreneurship and I know this would broaden my client base. After implementing all these strategies, I began to see results. It was such an amazing feeling knowing that I’m actually receiving income from something I created.

Heyyy! I’m Meek, I’m the owner of RetwistedbyMeek. I have a passion for Locs and it shows in my work. I truly love to service locs and handle them with care and love. I offer Loc maintenance services to adults and children, as young as 3 years old. I provide a clean and positive atmosphere; along with great customer service. One thing I love most about locs, would be to style them. Styling locs brings so much creativity, from the different lengths, textures, sizes and knowing that each set of locs will stand out in there own way.

What do you think helped you build your reputation within your market?

When staring a business first impression is a lasting impression, no matter if the experience was good or bad. What helped me build my reputation, was implementing the strategy of “Treat people how you’ll like to be treated.” I know that I love great customer service and I wanted my clients to have that experience. I wanted my clients to know that I am welcoming, respectful and I provide a calm positive atmosphere. Providing this experience had become successful. Your clients will always appreciate you a lot more if you show them importance. When having your brand you are the face, so what you display will always reflect back to you. Be mindful of your behavior at all times, you never know who’s watching. One last thing, “How you act, is what you’ll attract” Clients usually look for a stylist who’s personality is similar to their own. So if your not happy with the clientele you’ve been receiving, it’s time to reevaluate some things.

What’s been the best source of new clients for you?

Instagram has been a great source for new clients. This platform is so broaden that it can reach people from all over. You’ll just have to remain consistent with posting and connecting with the people.
