We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Chueh-Hui Huang a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Chueh-Hui, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. What’s been the most meaningful project you’ve worked on?
“Echoes of Kef Time” is the most meaningful project I’ve had the privilege to work on. It’s a documentary that explores the fading tradition of Armenian-American Kef music, following the journey of a 22-year-old grandson of an Armenian oud master as he endeavors to keep this tradition alive. Throughout the production and editing process, our team engaged in profound discussions about the influence of Western music on Armenian traditional music, how music and dance played a pivotal role in carrying Armenians through the hardships of genocide and difficult times, the question of whether the younger generation would take an interest in reviving their heritage, and how language is preserved through traditional music, among other topics.
I deeply appreciate the opportunity to be part of this team and to contribute to the preservation of such a rich and distinct culture, one that stands in contrast to my own. While we are documenting a film centered around Armenian traditional culture, the overarching theme of fading traditions and the specter of genocide resonates globally, transcending borders, races, and tribes.
I hope that this film will instill in its audiences a newfound faith in their own traditions and roots, inspiring them to reevaluate their cultural identity with fresh perspectives.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I am a film editor based in Los Angeles with a deep passion for crafting innovative narratives that inspire audiences to see the world through new perspectives.
Seven years ago, I made the bold transition from my undergraduate economics major to pursue my lifelong dream in the world of filmmaking. Throughout my journey, I have worn various hats and adapted to the ever-evolving landscape of the industry. My journey began as a production assistant at a prominent commercial production company, where I took my first steps into the filmmaking world. During this time, I had the opportunity to contribute to several notable projects and hone my craft.
I take pride in my natural ability to collaborate effectively and maintain an optimistic outlook as a team player. My hallmark qualities include a relentless focus on storytelling, an insatiable curiosity that spans diverse subject matters, an experimental approach to creative editing styles, and a knack for in-depth analytical thinking. These attributes, combined with my dedication to the craft, are what truly set me apart as an editor in the world of filmmaking.
I look forward to the opportunity to bring fresh and innovative storytelling to the screen, inspiring others to experience life with new lenses.

What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
As an artist, my core purpose is to break new ground in the expression of human nature and predicament. I find the most rewarding moments in my work when it resonates deeply with audiences. Whether my films open new doors to unexplored worlds, provide solace by acknowledging shared human experiences, or inspire new perspectives and actions in life, I aim to contribute to a more friendly and connected world through my filmmaking.
Having spent years making films in diverse countries, I’ve gained valuable experiences that I’m eager to share with aspiring filmmakers. I’ve had the privilege of serving as a judge at several film festivals, offering constructive feedback and suggestions to filmmakers from around the world. Additionally, I’ve had the opportunity to mentor fellow filmmakers through programs like the USC International Student Mentorship Program. The ability to give back to the filmmaking community is immensely fulfilling to me.

Is there mission driving your creative journey?
My ultimate goal is to emerge as a transformative editor in the realm of film and television, dedicated to amplifying the voices and perspectives of women and underrepresented communities. Through the art of editing, I aim to restore and celebrate their unique sensibilities, thoughts, and experiences.
Throughout much of cinematic history, women have often found themselves confined within the narrow boundaries of the male gaze, while underrepresented communities have been burdened with damaging stereotypes. It is my unwavering commitment to reshape the cinematic narrative, fostering a more inclusive and authentic portrayal of these groups. I firmly believe that this endeavor will not only boost self-awareness and confidence within women and underrepresented communities but also empower every individual to fully embrace and become the person they rightfully deserve to be.
