Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Chuck D. Corbin. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Chuck D., looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Can you share a story with us from back when you were an intern or apprentice? Maybe it’s a story that illustrates an important lesson you learned or maybe it’s a just a story that makes you laugh (or cry)?
I’m still an apprentice, and if you’re an artist you always should be. In this vast world of expression, and a sea of mediums, you’ll learn that there’s multiple ways to paint a picture. Yet the methods used to market the product which is the picture, must be very particular to the target demographic. My most recent apprenticeship actually came from a partnership believe it or not. Me being the young, talented, ambitious type…met with the old school, statistic driven brick wall. I thought I was going to come in and take the television and radio world by storm. Yet when it comes to marketing intellectual property & events, the internet differs from television and radio substantially. Most would think its a different side of the same coin, but its more like crypto to physical currency. No matter how skilled at a craft you may be, always take the time out to learn more if there are lessons to be taught. Ego has no place in your life when it comes to growth.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
My name is Chuck D. Corbin, of Corbin Media, LLC., Oscilloscope Records, & Vice President of Baghead Distribution Academy. I’ve been an artist my entire life. I was blessed and fortunate enough for my skills over the years to be honed and sharpened by various art schools, and programs yet it took painstaking work to even get accepted into many of them. I’d have to give major props to the School of Design at NC State, and their graphic design programs. I truly fell in love with how so many mediums and art styles can be encompassed in one body of work, whether it be digital or physical to make the finished product. Once I left I eventually got a hold of photoshop and never looked back. My very first graphics client contacted me the same night I opened my business up in college in 2009. I’d have to say that was the most stressful four hours of my life, and still the piece I am most proud of to this day. Although I am also in the Information Technology field, art & tech go hand in hand. Present day I do it all, graphic design, photography, cinematography, sound engineering, film/music production, managing talent, as well as offering apprenticeships. The problems faced in this amazing and ever changing industry is technology. The convenience of it all has impacted many artist such as myself, where the use of templates takes the place of imagination, and the use of AI has taken the places of painters, and artist altogether. Adaptability and reinvention is something that must be done more often these days, in an ever changing field where technology is your competition and not a person.

What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
Revealing a finished work to a client that they’re satisfied with is the most rewarding aspect to this day. Essentially speaking, a designer takes a clients words, and makes something out of nothing. Being able to illustrate someone else’s imagination & present it to them is no easy feat. The pause as they’re stuck studying every aspect intently, squinting their eyes, moving their bodies with the flow of the art on the page, then finally the large gasp of air. “I love it” they say, every other word a compliment on how their thoughts were portrayed and the essence of “just how I dreamed it” still catches me off guard. Nevertheless its the smile that I truly work for.

How’d you build such a strong reputation within your market?
It may sound redundant or somewhat improbable, but being everywhere at once is what helped build my reputation. Unfortunately I won’t get into the specifics of my magic tricks, yet I can say a speedy turn around time is the difference maker when it’s coupled with good quality.
