We were lucky to catch up with Chrystal Barnes recently and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Chrystal thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. What did your parents do right and how has that impacted you in your life and career?
I was raised in a single parent home with my mother and my two oldest siblings. My mother worked several odd jobs to try and make ends meet. I’ve never observed my mother complain nor did I observe her give up. Some times my mother would leave one job and go straight to the next. I can recall mom telling me baby girl to get what you want you have to put in the work. From the age of fifteen I’ve walked in my mother’s footsteps by becoming a hard worker and a goal getter. Even after having my own child right after high school and unfortunately having to raise him as a single parent as well I’ve always worked for everything that we had. I now understand the importance of working smatter not working harder. My mother set this example for me and it has made an huge impact on my personal journey.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I was born and raised in Newport News, VA and have lived here my entire life. My mother did the best that she could raising three children on her own but she did not teach us the importance financially literacy. My mother taught us how to work hard and not to depend on others to survive. As a single partner mother I can recall there were times when I would apply for living necessities such as cars/homes and I would be denied over and over again. This was embarrassing and frustrating because I had to figure out what I needed to do to get what we needed. I’ve always wanted to teach my son how to break the generational curses that my family and I’ve encountered. I finally decided that enough was enough and living paycheck to paycheck was not the way that we would live. It’s funny how the universe will provide exactly what you need. In 2019 my son discovered the business opportunity first and after observation I’ve witnessed many lives being impacted. Based off of his hard work and dedication I decided to join the business as well. CMB_FINANCIAL_SERVICES is dedicated to sharing the importance of financial literacy. Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
I’ve faced some of the toughest battles throughout my journey in life that some individuals most likely would’ve given up. From the sudden deaths of my father and both grandmothers I had to remain strong for my loved ones. I never would’ve imaged encountering my maternal grandmother take her last breath. I am forever broken hearted and still in the process of grieving/healing after 5 years later. One of the toughest battles that I’ve been resilient through was raising a son on my own without a consistent presence of his father. As a mother I’ve had to watch my son fight through some of the same struggles that I had such as feeling abandoned. It was extremely hard raising a son especially in this day and age but I am grateful for the village that we had to help us both overcome these challenges. Personally I’ve also struggled for many years with my own battles of depression and anxiety. My passion to serve others has helped me keep going and to spread the awareness of getting help from a trained professional. I know that I was born with a purpose and it is my desire to walk in it to the best of my ability. This business has literally changed my life along with the lives of so many individuals/families. I am both humbled and honored to be a part of it.
