Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Chrysta Miller. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Chrysta , appreciate you joining us today. To kick things off, we’d love to hear about things you or your brand do that diverge from the industry standard
As the owner and baker/decorator of my own cookie business I have been able to basically do whatever I want, and it has been fun! I remember when I first started this business I told my husband I really wanted this to be unique and completely my style. I specialize in naughty and inappropriate cookies. I love to make a design that makes people talk and laugh. In this industry a lot of cookie artist play it safe and only get too do what the customers want, I have been so lucky to be able to design all cookies too my style. My customers generally email me a theme and color pallet and let me make up the deigns myself. I also have been so blessed with customers and followers who appreciate my sense of humor. I do a lot of pop-ups around Dallas/Mesquite area and always include naughty cookies and all my customers absolutely love them! I think they truly appreciate how real I am, I don’t pretended to be someone im not, and they can relate to me in so many levels.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
Hi, I am Chrysta Miller the owner of Cookies by Chrysta located in Mesquite Texas. I am 35 and have been in the food in dusty for a little over 10 years. I graduated from culinary school and left corporate America and plan to never go back! I actually started decorating cookies when my best friend wanted to throw herself a huge flamingo themed birthday party so I decided to make he cookies! It was so much fun and eve4ryone loved them that I decided to keep on trying to perfect them, I have been blessed with amazing friends and family who supported me in the beginning. and helped spread the word about my cookies. in 2019 I found myself working at a pastry catering company while running my cookie business on the side. I remember thinking that I wanted to focus more on cookies so decided to leave my kitchen job and try to find a office job so I wouldn’t be got tired of working to kitchen jobs. That job did not work out so I took on cookies full time and luckily my customers have kept me busy ever since! I specialize in custom cookies for all occasions, and do pop-up shops, and cookie workshops around town. I am also a social media content creator on Instagram and Tiktok. Although my inappropriate cookies always seem to get me banned. I absolutely love what I do and can not wait to see what the upcoming years have ins tore for me.
Have you ever had to pivot?
During the beginning of the pandemic I had just started offering workshops and doing more pop-ups so I had to completely re evaluate how to operate my business. People also stopped having bug parties therefore they did not need 2 dozen cookies for orders. I had to start offering smaller amounts of cookies for orders and I also started offering DIY cookie decorating kits which moms loved since it helped keep the kids busy since they were now doing at home school. It took some planning but thankfully I stayed busy during the hard time and was able to keep my small business operating!
We’d love to hear the story of how you built up your social media audience?
I started my instagram 4 years ago and still have not been able to hit 10k followers! Where I started my Tiktok 2/2021 and am now at 26.3K followers. Social media is crazy. I think to be successful on social media you have to be consistent in posting and also find your niche. Do something different than others in your industry are doing and don’t be afraid to be yourself. People want authenticity and want to know you are a real person. I also run all my social media account myself, which is a lot of work. I have a Facebook, Instagram, Tiktok, and Snapchat. Social media is free so take advantage! You can now also make money with social media so that’s amazing!
