We were lucky to catch up with Christyana Fletcher recently and have shared our conversation below.
Christyana, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Are you happy as a creative professional? Do you sometimes wonder what it would be like to work for someone else?
I love doing photography. Photography is just one of my degrees – I also have a degree in sociology and I’m currently working in behavioral health. Working in an office is a lot different than working in a creative field. Working creatively allows me to get more invested and passionate about each individual project – and I get to work with other creative people to develop new ideas. Working in mental health is fulfilling – but being creative has had my heart since I was a little kid.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I am a photographer based out of Flagstaff Arizona. I mainly do portraits on location, and I love to work with clients to develop unique concepts for photo shoots. I also shoot grad sessions, album covers, and editorial style shoots.
In your view, what can society to do to best support artists, creatives and a thriving creative ecosystem?
I think the best way society can support artists if not by purchasing their services is to help promote and give testimony on their skill and ability. Artists rely on word of mouth to help build their following and grow their businesses.
We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
The biggest lesson I had to unlearn was perfectionism. When you’re doing something creative, it can be easy to keep working on things forever, changing and reimagining them until they become ‘perfect’, but perfect is a moving goal post. Each part of your creative process is valuable.
