Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Christy Young. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Christy, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. We’d love to go back in time and hear the story of how you came up with the name of your brand?
Before joining the Wonderful World of Real Estate in 2017, I was the owner/operator of Roller Derby Virginia Beach, a full service skate and derby gear shop and practice space, and the founder of Resort City Roller Dolls, a Recreational Roller Derby League. #32flavors was my Roller Derby number (F.U.B.A.R.bie), so when I started my Real Estate life I wanted to find a way to differentiate myself from every other agent while still honoring that number. I like to say the National Association of Realtors made me an agent and my mom made me special.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
I am Virginia Beach local grown. I grew up in Kempsville, graduated from Kempsville High, and still count the area among my favorite neighborhoods to show to new buyer clients. Any agent can show you a nice house in Fairfield, but can they tell you they remember when it was built and who lived there in the 80’s? I think not.
My many years of administrative support and working for and with local not for profits, as well as navigating the challenges of being a small business owner, not to even mention Roller Derby, have given me the gift of being able to think past the obvious and find more creative ways to make things happen. This alone is a Super Power for a Real Estate Professional. Sometimes the answer is just no, but sometimes it’s not right now or no, unless…finding a way to yes is kind of my thing.
How about pivoting – can you share the story of a time you’ve had to pivot?
Funny you used the term pivot. In Roller Derby one of the key positions on the track is the PIVOT. My favorite position to play, by the way. When I left the 9-5ish world and opened Roller Derby Virginia Beach I was 46 years old. After oh so many years of Monday-Friday and regular paychecks and benefits this was quite an upheaval, to say the least! Don’t get me wrong, I had the absolute time of my life. Skating every day was literally my dream come true…for almost five years until I had to pack up my skates and pivot again…5 years older and so much wiser. I knew I didn’t want to go back to a ‘regular job’ and I knew I loved working face to face with customers and having the knowledge to advise them and provide whatever they needed; be it skates, protective gear, lessons, encouragement, or a cool tee shirt.
Building and maintaining so many great personal relationships through my business proved to be perfect training for the best part of my career as a Realtor. As I like to say way too often (it applies in Real Estate a lot) ‘The universe tends to unfold as it should’.

What’s worked well for you in terms of a source for new clients?
I work by referral. Building a business by referral may not be the easiest plan. It obviously may take a little longer to see the fruits of your labor, but a personal referral from a client I’ve helped who trusts me enough to recommend me to a friend of family member is the absolute best validation that I’m doing something right.
There are so many sources for agents to buy leads, buy click on ads, etc. all over the internet. Tons of agents pay people to cold call homeowners to solicit business. Not only can these avenues cost a LOT of money, but it just feels disingenuous to me and probably to most of the people getting the calls.
I love Real Estate and I couldn’t be more certain this is exactly where I need to be. I fell head over heels by the end of my second Real Estate class and I have never looked back. Being fortunate enough to become part of OWN Real Estate in 2020 was the most beautiful icing on the cake. It’s a good life being Special Agent 32.
