We recently connected with Christy Sanborn and have shared our conversation below.
Christy, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Let’s kick things off with your mission – what is it and what’s the story behind why it’s your mission?
I had the honor of being a cosmetologist for over 20 years. One day I asked myself, “Is this it? Do I want to own my own hair salon?” The answer that I came up with was, surprisingly, no. At that point in my life I decided to do some soul searching in search of my true purpose. If not hair then what was I going to pursue? I loved the camaraderie of the salon and the therapist type role that I got to play behind the chair with my clients. It was the “coaching” that I loved most about my job. I had the privilege of making people look their best while talking them through their problems, and helping them find solutions. I decided that If I was going to make money as a Life Coach I had to find out if people would trust me with their deepest thoughts and concerns. I decided to go and hit the streets of New York City with a blow up couch to test my strengths. After many days of sitting on the sidewalk amongst strangers giving out “Free Advice” to anyone that would accept it, I knew I was ready for the transition. I started calling myself a “Life Coach” and I started my own Life Coaching business back in March of 2020.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your background and context?
Ever since I can remember I have been helping people come up with solutions to their problems. I have been blessed with being an optimist since birth. After working at many different jobs growing up I landed as a hostess at a nice Italian restaurant in Ardmore, Pa.
One night I was approached by a nice gentleman at a restaurant. The gentleman told me that I would make an excellent hairstylist. He asked me if I would ever consider going to school for that? I had never thought about something like that before so I decided to give that a try. I graduated Cosmotology school with a Pennsylvania Cosmotology license when I was 22. I then began my many years of working as a hairstylist. Funny thing is even after 20 years of cutting hair I’m still not the best hairstylist I know. I’m a much better Life Coach then I am a hairstylist and I always have been. That’s the funny thing about your purpose, most of us are already currently working in an area where our purpose is being served, we’re just not aware of it. I have now been a Life Coach for 2 1/2 years and it is the best decision I’ve ever made for myself. I specialize in individual life coaching and also couples coaching. My motto is, if one person in the household becomes a healthier happier version of them self everyone in that household benefits. You don’t need everyone in your life to change, you only need yourself to change for the better. The biggest problem most people have is they don’t know what they want. They may be settling in some area of their life that is making them feel defeated. I help people get to a clearer understanding of what it is that they “do want” to have in their life and map out a clear route to get them there.
My job as someone’s Life Coach is to give them new tools to put into place so that they can get themselves out of a rut faster in the future. I explain to them what the tools are and how to use them . These are a few tools that I help individuals to implement. Creating boundaries, implementing self-care, meditation, eating healthy, community service, reading, and many, many more. What sets me apart from other coaches and therapists is that I personally use all of these tools in my every day life. I use these tools in my marriage, as a mother and as a business owner. I would never ask someone to use a tool that I currently don’t use in my every day life. I am always upgrading my toolbelt especially when old tools aren’t working anymore in my life. I am most proud of the fact that I believe any situation can be resolved. Whether it’s a family issue, a marriage issue, a financial issue, everything can be worked out. There is always a solution for every problem.
I also believe that you don’t need to go back into your past to fix your present situation or your future. Living in the moment is where most of us don’t spend enough time living. That is where all of your power is, in this present moment. I believe that people shouldn’t need to lean on therapist or a Life Coach for very long. Just long enough to get emotionally stable, and to start believing in yourself. My job is to help you find the self-confidence and the tools to propel you forward in your life on the right path for yourself and your true purpose.
What do you think helped you build your reputation within your market?
I believe that referrals build the strongest business’s. As a Life Coach I obtain new clients through referrals from old clients/ current clients. If you over serve and over deliver you will always have an abundance of clients/customers in any business.
Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
The biggest lesson that I had to unlearn is that you should always put other people’s needs before your own. I learned this lesson growing up and I always believed it was the truth. But by practicing this belief I never got very far in life concerning relationships, or business. I had to teach myself a new way of living. Now I put myself first than everyone else second. I put my own needs first so that I can be healthy, happy balanced, and well for everyone in my life. I’m able to show up 100% and whole for everyone in my life. One of my favorite quotes is by Wayne Dyer. “You cannot give away what you don’t have.” Make sure your cup is full so that you have something to offer the world. You cannot give from an empty cup.
