We were lucky to catch up with Christy Miller recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Christy, thanks for joining us today. Let’s start with a story that highlights an important way in which your brand diverges from the industry standard.
My bakery is not your standard bakery. I set out on a challenge to start a bakery that created traditional bakery items in a not so traditional way. We don’t use sugar, flour or inflammatory oils in anything we make. We are able to satisfy your sweet tooth while not impacting your blood sugar. We give you flour like textures without the use of gluten or the carbs in traditional flour. We use high amounts of ‘good fats” to create delicious and satisfying desserts.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
In 2018, I decided to change my health. I was addicted to sugar and wanted to break that addiction. I started the keto diet. In doing so, I had to learn to cook in a manner that avoided high-carb ingredients and inflammatory oils. When I didn’t have time to cook, I learned my options for buying foods prepared in the way that provided success in improving my health was very limited. Originally, this was “My Why” for starting Triangle Bakery. I soon learned there was a demand for my bakery items from more than just the Keto dieting community. My customers came from the diabetic community who needed to keep their desserts low carb. My customers came from an allergy community where traditional products’ gluten, grains, and dairy products caused allergic reactions in those with sensitivities. The mission of Triangle Bakery broadened to not only service keto dieters but a whole host of dietary limitations.
Can you talk to us about how you funded your business?
I started by business initially by self-funding. I went thought a business incubator program called Launch Rolesville that taught me the value of business credit and the linked me to the Kiva crowd funding program which is is where I received my first business loan. The Kiva program required me to get 8 friends to loan me at least $20. My loan was fully funded after that in less than 24 hours by about 20 additional lenders that I did not know.
How about pivoting – can you share the story of a time you’ve had to pivot?
I was laid off my job in corporate America a few years ago. This was the time I decided to pivot and start Triangle Bakery. There was a gap in the community to make available the type of foods I was eating to improve my personal health and many others could benefit from. Triangle Bakery has evolved from focusing on keto diet friendly foods to helping those with a food allergies such as gluten or the allergies that require you to a vegan diet as well.
