Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Christy Melgoza. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Christy , thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Let’s start with the story of your mission. What should we know?
My newest business, Girl! Can You Talk? Podcast has been years in the making my whole life, I just didn’t know it till now! The podcast was launched on June 1st of 2023. The struggles and triumphs of my life have prepared me to have this voice to help others know “they are not alone!” One of the times where life hit me hard was at the age of 43 and pre-menopause seemed to come out of nowhere! I felt like i was crazy, had no energy, and certainly no motivation. This put me on a journey to find better answers for myself and share it with others. My co-hosts Ana Allen and my mission is to “talk about the things your mama didn’t” and create a community that feels seen and heard. This is our unfiltered everyday conversations that we share with our listeners. Our hope is that through our hilarious stories, our listeners will connect and relate and seek for their own “better ways.” I am so thankful that we were bold enough to start a new journey that we knew nothing about. Both of us turn 50 this year and we want to live our best, healthiest and happiest life! I do believe one of those ways is connecting with great people of all ages! Some of our mottos are #boldnotold and #strongerforlonger I am excited to continue this mission to help women, help women.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
My journey of helping people started when I was 18 years old. I began teaching ballroom dance to adults in my Mom and Dads studio. I quickly found out that i had a talent for coaching. I worked my way up on the business side and on the competitive side in the ballroom dance industry. I definitely had the craving to be my own boss, run my own business and raise my kids the way I wanted to. My husband and I purchased our first business when I was 31 years old, moved, with a 8 week old baby to boot! I have never looked back! Since then between my husband, my BFF and I, we have 8 businesses. The newest being my new LOVE, Girl! Can You talk? Podcast. What is unique about this podcast is it is unfiltered and real conversations. This is NOT an instagram perfect podcast. We are very proactive in finding better solutions for aging more gracefully and we share it with our listeners and we are hysterical I might add! Topics including but not limited to: hormones, relationships, raising kids, empty next, exercise, loss, Sex and so on! The need for this community has never been so great, and I am very happy to be a part of it.
Any stories or insights that might help us understand how you’ve built such a strong reputation?
What has helped me build my reputation in my current podcast market consists of 2 main things. The first one consists of a long time career of proving myself to be the best I could in the ballroom industry. My mother used to always say I was tenacious. I believe long term effort and consistency is the key to success but also is the foundation to building a fantastic reputation. Most of the time success happens over time and being willing to stay the course through it all has paid off for me. Second, being visible, proactive, and real on social media prior to me starting a podcast has helped my new venture. Since I already was sharing the things I was passionate about prior to sharing them on the podcast. Of course, it is never too late to start. I recommend start with being consist on one platform, and then add another. I often have people come up to me and share how much they like my reels or TikTok’s and I had know idea they were even watching. Of course, being active on social media is a lot of work but it is a great way to increase your audience and build a stringer reputation within your market.
Can you tell us about a time you’ve had to pivot?
I have pivoted many times in business for several reasons. The first had to do with having kids and wanting to be the one to raise them myself. Growing up with parents who owned Ballroom dance studios was difficult for me because of the hours 1-10 PM, which resulted in not seeing my parents very often. I grew and learned so much through my adolescence but I wanted it to be different experience for my family. Buying our first business was largely because I wanted to make the decisions on how I wanted my work/life balance to look like. The second major pivot happened when my BFF and I started our first online at home based business back in 2017. I really wanted to diversify the type of business I was involved in. Having a brick and mortar type business came with its pros and cons. I was passionate about having a business that I could do from anywhere and again work it around my schedule. I also felt that adding another business that isn’t in the same field was smart business as we have seen throughout the past years. The one thing that always rang true for me when I chose to pivot was did it align with my passions and where i wanted to spend my time.
