We were lucky to catch up with Christy Mehelich recently and have shared our conversation below.

Christy, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Naming anything – including a business – is so hard. Right? What’s the story behind how you came up with the name of your brand?

I came up with the name The Sugaring Hut very organically actually. I have been a lover of beaches and tropical vibes for as long as I can remember, and my front desk at The Sugaring Hut just happens to be a tiki hut! When I expanded out from being inside salons I was thinking to myself, “okay, sugaring needs to be in the name…I’ve always called it The Hut, so how about The Sugaring Hut”!? I met with someone about creating a logo for me and he just happened to know exactly what to do. Showed me the pineapple in the name and I just instantly knew that was it!!!!!

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.

Hey everyone! I am Christy Mehelich, owner of The Sugaring Hut! I am a licensed Master Esthetician in WA and specialize in body sugaring. What is sugaring you ask? Sugaring is a unique form of hair removal that uses a ball of sugar. Our product is made up of 3 simple ingredients- sugar, water, and lemon juice. It is all natural, so natural you can eat it!!!
There are many benefits to sugar vs. regular waxing.
The main benefits are-
1. sugar is all natural, so it is better for your skin and is more sustainable
2. we remove your hair WITH the hair growth instead of AGAINST the hair growth, so this is better for your follicles and most say is less painful than waxing
3. sugar just removes dead skin on the surface, not an entire layer of your skin
4. sugar is water soluble, so it easily washes off!
5. sugar is warm, never hot so it will never burn your skin
6. because we are pulling the hair out WITH the hair growth there is a lot less likely chance of hair breakage meaning your skin will stay smoother longer, and most hairs will grow back thinner, finer, and half as much! It’s AMAZING!!!!

Here at The Sugaring Hut our main goal is to provide hair removal BUT we also want to provide the best experience possible while removing your hair! We all know that hair removal is no walk in the park, so coming into a fun exciting vibe and environment is key and one of our main goals here at The Sugaring Hut. We want all of our clients to leave feeling hair free and FABULOUS after their appointment, and I think there is a lot to be said about the fun caring energy that our team provides! We LOVE to have fun at work…it’s ALWAYS a party at The Sugaring Hut!

What’s worked well for you in terms of a source for new clients?

I would definitely say word of mouth. Providing our clients with an amazing service that makes them feel good has been the best way to gain new customers. If you love the service that was provided to you and leave feeling amazing I believe that is the best time for clients to tell their friends they have to come in and try it!!!

How about pivoting – can you share the story of a time you’ve had to pivot?

That word pivot. HA! I always say after covid if I hear the words “pivot your business” one more time I’ll lose it. hahaha! If you’re a business owner who made it through the lockdown I know you feel me. I would say the biggest time that I’ve had to pivot was during the covid lockdown. However, in being shut down, there was literally nothing I could do during that time. I would have loved to pivot my business and generate revenue, but with not being allowed to be in contact with other people there wasn’t a whole lot for me to do other than to wait.
During that time I chose to use it wisely and do something that I could for my business. I had always wanted to progress my business by getting an online scheduling system (I was old school and doing everything myself!) get a system for email campaigns, a social media presence, and a website but I just never had the time or extra funds to make it happen. Well, with my business closed down for 3 months I finally had the time to do these tasks! I pivoted my business how I could and am SO grateful that I spent my time on this because it has made transitions with growth easier, and has benefited my business in more ways that I can express!!!!!
My recommendation?? Make lists for yourself of things you’d love to see in your business. Don’t have time to tackle all of them? Guess what! You never know what life is going to throw at you, and you never know when you might just see yourself with extra free time to complete these tasks! Always have lists and just know you’ll get to them when you can and it will be SO worth it when you do!!
