Today we’d like to introduce you to Christy Hunter.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
Growing up, I was obsessed with watching the National Geographic channel and looking through their magazines. It combined two things that I loved: animals and photography. As the oldest of two children, I was the first in my family to attend college. As I started looking at schools to apply to, it became very obvious to me how expensive my education would be. The art school that I had my heart set on didn’t accept typical scholarships or provide financial aid. So I decided to pursue another passion of mine (foreign languages) and went to a more affordable local university.
Four years later, while scrolling through Facebook, I came across an ad for a free webinar teaching the basics of photography. Without a second thought, I signed up. Less than a year after attending that webinar I had invested in paid photography education, bought my first camera, and never looked back!
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Running my own photography business has certainly come with its challenges. In addition to the typical entrepreneurial struggles, I’m also a military spouse. The transient lifestyle that accompanies military life makes running a locally-focused business pretty difficult. Every few years I’m relocating and reestablishing myself in a new area. These difficulties, although frustrating, have allowed me to hone in on my marketing skills as a business owner.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I chose to specialize in wedding photography. Working with couples who are totally in love and eager to start a new chapter of their lives together really gets me inspired and excited to pick up my camera. Since I started my photography business, I’ve always been drawn to a bright and colorful photo style with a casual and romantic feel. I think what truly separates me from other photographers (and what I hear from my past wedding couples the most) is how helpful, caring, detailed, and organized I am. They wake up on the wedding day knowing that I’ve got their backs and that I’ll do whatever I can to make their wedding day amazing and giving them beautiful photos to remember their big day.
Is there something surprising that you feel even people who know you might not know about?
I’m actually very shy and introverted! On wedding days, I really have to push myself so that I can constantly give helpful direction to vendors as well as friends and family in attendance. I interact with A LOT of people on a wedding day! Weddings force me out of my shell (which I love), but it isn’t something that comes natural to me.
