We were lucky to catch up with Christy Harris recently and have shared our conversation below.
Christy, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Naming anything – including a business – is so hard. Right? What’s the story behind how you came up with the name of your brand?
I wanted the name of my business to be simple and represent exactly what I was selling: Butters, Oils, Soaps, Scrubs. From that, B.O.S.S. Essentials was born! The name was simple and easy to remember, which I felt was important in building my brand.
Christy, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I have been a licensed cosmetologist for 10 years. However, when I got into it, I enjoyed learning about the chemistry of skin and hair, more than I did actual styling. I began creating hair and skincare products out of necessity, which I feel is how all businesses begin. I had a need for simple products, due to my extremely sensitive skin and needed to remedy it. It was was hard to find products on the market that didn’t flare up my acne, eczema or seborrheic dermatitis. One wrong product that had too much fragrance or allergen, would cause my skin to suffer for days or even weeks at a time.
What sets me apart from others, is that I don’t sell anything that me or my children can’t use. I take into account comedogenic ratings, skin sensitivity combinations, fragrance oil sensitivities, etc. I provide simple solutions because I believe sensitive skin appreciates simple. So minimal ingredients are the key to the success of my products.
I am most proud of building my brand with my children, while in law school! It has provided a creative outlet and fulfilled the love that I have for hair and skin, while learning the complexities of law. My products are made in small, limited batches, so products sell quickly, but I plan to expand production once I pass the bar. However, small batches and minimal ingredients will always be the core of our products. Quality is imperative to our business.
I encourage everyone interested in B.O.S.S. Essentials to sign up for notifications our website, and be notified of our restocks!
We’d love to hear the story of how you built up your social media audience?
To be honest, my social media presence is terrible! Most of my customers find my products through word of mouth. I actually prefer it that way for now, since I’m still in law school. Once I pass the bar and have time to scale the business beyond what I’ve accomplished, I’ll take social media seriously. My advice to those who are frustrated with the time needed to build their audience on social media, is to be mindful of a time when social media didn’t exist. What other methods of marketing were used to build businesses? If those methods are more time sensible for you now, try them out until you have time to make quality content. One thing I refuse to have, is tacky social media content. If I don’t have the time to devote to it, I’d rather not have any at all!
What’s been the most effective strategy for growing your clientele?
Honesty and transparency have been the most effective strategy for growing my clientele. I don’t claim to create any miracles, because I know the solutions for various skin conditions comes from what we ingest. Do my products help with eczema symptoms, seborrheic dermatitis, etc.? Yes, but what will help the most is a change in diet. Clients appreciate honesty, and I think this creates a loyal following.
