We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Christy Bennett. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Christy below.
Christy, appreciate you joining us today. So, folks often look at a successful business and think it became a success overnight – but that often obscures all the nitty, gritty details of everything that went into the growth phase of your business. We’d love to hear about your scaling story and how you scaled up?
It was not easy as I always had a love and passion for the arts since I was a little girl, especially in writing where it eventually branched out into filmmaking. However, living with autism and having mental illness, it wasn’t a walk in the park. Back in my high school days, I was mentally unstable to where I was losing my passion in the arts and losing interest. It’s like it was not fun anymore. That’s when I realized I needed to seek help and turn my life around. Also, overtime, I learned to express a lot of it into writing, especially once I started film school. Now here I am, helping write scripts for short films, and I even directed my first short film for the 48 hour Four Points film challenge. Moreover, now even working on a novel after finding some inspiration in table top role playing games.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
My name is Christy Bennett, and I am a writer and filmmaker with autism and hearing loss. I first started writing stories back in my elementary school days after we would have story time and would have to analyze that story. When I was in my adult years, I enrolled in a film school called Options For All in San Diego, CA and graduated during the pandemic back in 2020. However, I am still continuing my education through a company called Time Ends Productions and continuing to learn new things as I go. During the pandemic, I started a music blog of my own called Shiningbind Band Talk, but then had to put it on hold after moving out of San Diego County to Murrieta in Riverside County. I am planning to eventually start it back up again and branch out from there. In the meantime, been focusing on writing a novel titled “Behind a Streetkid’s Eyes” and helping work on more short films as I directed my first short film back in November of 2022.

What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
Well growing up wasn’t easy as I grew up in a broken home and was bullied a lot in my school days because of my disability and my weight which overtime lead to me being diagnosed with a mental illness called Schizoaffective disorder with bipolar features along with PTSD. I had to learn to let the pain go and learn to love myself and not give into those negative people. I just had to keep going forward.
What do you think helped you build your reputation within your market?
I do a lot of networking, especially online, and I go to a lot of events too to socialize and share about my experiences. I learned that networking is key, and it can help you get a lot of golden opportunities in the film and media industry. Always remember to just be chill and be yourself.
