Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Christos Perry. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Christos, appreciate you joining us today. Are you able to earn a full-time living from your creative work? If so, can you walk us through your journey and how you made it happen?
Yes I have been able to earn a full time living from my creative work! Its tough some days but its definitely doable. I started out like any other young creative fresh out of art school. I had to get a regular job to pay the bills and get by. Each day after work I would start my second job which was freelance. If I had known what I know now I would’ve been a lot more open to collaborating with others earlier on in my career as opposed to working on projects by myself.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
My name is Christos Perry better known by my artist name Stosart. I’m the owner of Dynasty Animation LLC. We are a black owned and operated animation studio based in Atlanta Georgia. We take all sorts of animated projects from commercials to music videos and short films. We service all types of clients from up and coming artist to established brands and production companies, and everyone in between. I think what sets us apart from the rest is the fact that we are a black owned and operated studio we are from the culture. Even though most of us went to expensive art school we all grew up with the natural black experience. We are in the process of developing our own I. P. for the future as I plan on taking this company global.
Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
I’ve had plenty of ups and downs along my journey. I can recall one time in particular where My team and I had a really big opportunity to work with a major brand and major recording artist. In my eyes maybe one of the biggest opportunities of my career. Unfortunately we were working with a video director that truly lacked professionalism. This in turn hindered the progression of the entire project. Our backs were against the wall and we had virtually no time to complete the required deadline. we were a day behind schedule and ultimately missed the deadline. I was devastated. Not only had I let the client down, but my team as well. For a week or two after I really questioned if this was the right career path for me or if I even deserved to be running this company. But with the help of my colleages and family I was able to pull myself out of that funk. A few months later I reached out to the client extending a formal apology expressing my deepest graditudes for the opportunity. They were very kind and understanding, they even said that they would keep me posted for future projects. All in all it was a lesson in never giving on yourself even when you think you’ve lost it all. There is always an opportunity to mend and rebuild broken bridges.
Is there something you think non-creatives will struggle to understand about your journey as a creative?
I think a lot of non-creatives don’t understand the aspect of being inherently introverted as creative. A lot of the time we have to be closed off from the world and spending copious amounts of time and energy at our desks or in our studios making things for the non creatives to enjoy. For me personally its been particularly difficult at certain points. I’ve had relationships fail, and friends laugh and make fun of me for what I do. In the past I was hurt by these things, but over time, especially as an artist, you have to learn to develop a thick skin and not care what people think about you or your art. As long as you create from the heart and feed your spirit you can never lose. There is always going to be an audience for what you create. You just have to tap in with the ones who love and support what you do and neglect the naysayers, even if they are friends and family.
