We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Christopher Wilson. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Christopher below.
Hi Christopher, thanks for joining us today. It’s easy to look at a business or industry as an outsider and assume it’s super profitable – but we’ve seen over and over again in our conversation with folks that most industries have factors that make profitability a challenge. What’s biggest challenge to profitability in your industry?
Designing and launching a fashion line entails numerous challenges, and navigating e-commerce presents its own set of hurdles, particularly in acquiring customers and driving sales to achieve profitable margins. Pricing strategies pose a significant initial obstacle, especially for newcomers in the industry, compounded by the competitive landscape dominated by established brands with loyal clienteles. However, despite the challenges, I am optimistic about the future growth potential of my brand. At present, attracting organic customers proves most effective through strategic advertising on social media platforms and digital channels such as Google and Amazon, leveraging their vast reach to connect with broader audiences. While the costs associated with marketing and the prevailing inflationary pressures on goods present financial considerations, I firmly believe that the investment in establishing and promoting a clothing brand is worthwhile, promising substantial rewards in due course.
Christopher, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
My name is Christopher Wilson, better known as Cosmo the Truth, the rapper, and I’m also the visionary behind a newly established clothing brand. With a degree in graphic design and a passion for music production, my journey in the fashion industry began in 2011, where I first delved into the art of screen printing, designing for reggae and Rasta enthusiasts worldwide. Over the years, I’ve had the privilege of crafting apparel, souvenirs, and collections for renowned companies like Carnival Cruise Line and Royal Caribbean, among others.
Drawing from these diverse experiences, I embarked on a new adventure in January 2023, birthing the vibrant brand, Doobee Adore. Doobee Adore isn’t just about clothing—it’s a celebration of self-love, positivity, and the beauty of our world, with a nod to the positive impact of cannabis. Emerging from the challenges of COVID-19, I wanted to shift the narrative back to self-empowerment and love.
What sets Doobee Adore apart is our unwavering commitment to sustainability. While we offer a range of exclusive styles, from comfort utility to streetwear, and even premium faux leather handbags, our mission goes beyond mere fashion. We strive to source environmentally friendly garments, with the ultimate goal of becoming a beacon for sustainable textile goods. Our ethos is clear: we want our customers to feel confident and attractive in our apparel without compromising the health of our planet or the well-being of its inhabitants.
I invite you to explore our brand and experience the unique fusion of style, positivity, and sustainability that defines Doobee Adore. Inspired by visionaries like Virgil Abloh, may his legacy continue to inspire greatness in us all. Join us on this journey of self-expression, empowerment, and love for both ourselves and the world around us.
Can you tell us about a time you’ve had to pivot?
In business, recognizing when to pivot or make a change is paramount to achieving success. Recently, I made the decision to step away from a part-time job because it no longer resonated with my overarching goals. While I am deeply committed to my clothing brand, I find myself financing most of my projects, necessitating occasional part-time work to propel my endeavors forward.
The catalyst for my decision to pivot and resign stemmed from the realization that the job not only diverged from my objectives but also failed to acknowledge my true value as both an employee and an artist. As artists, our passion, diligence, and reputation are our most prized assets, and I firmly believe in advocating for what we rightfully deserve, regardless of the circumstances.
Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
I’ve come to realize that when people dismiss something as “too good to be true,” they’re inadvertently casting doubt on themselves. However, I’ve adopted a different perspective—one that embraces the notion of going with the flow when things seem too good to be true. This mindset resonates deeply with me, and I’ve wholeheartedly embraced it in my life.
Now, when opportunities arise that appear almost surreal, I choose to ride the wave of positivity and seize the moment. I attribute these moments not only to the workings of my higher power but also to the universe affirming that everything will fall into place as long as I maintain a positive outlook and mindset. It’s a belief system that empowers me to embrace life’s unexpected blessings with gratitude and optimism.
