We were lucky to catch up with Christopher Weedon recently and have shared our conversation below.
Christopher, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Can you tell us a story about a time you failed?
Since childhood, my aspiration had been to create the perfect family—a union of two loving parents, imparting essential values like self-awareness, kindness, love, and integrity. I imagined myself achieving this vision, married with children by 25, living what many call the American dream. However, at 19, life took an unexpected turn when I discovered I would soon become a father.
The news of impending fatherhood triggered a tidal wave of emotions, marking my first battle with depression. It wasn’t that I didn’t want my son, but rather, I felt a profound disappointment in myself. Wrestling with the realization that I had become a statistic weighed heavily on me. The relationship with my son’s mother was far from ideal, and I found myself ill-equipped to navigate the responsibilities of potential marriage and parenthood.
As the challenges mounted, the relationship deteriorated, leading to a tumultuous five years and eventual separation. Today, at 14, my son grapples with societal pressures, high school dynamics, and the absence of a biological father figure in his life—a reality far removed from my childhood aspirations.
Acknowledging my role in this situation, I recognized a pattern of extreme highs and lows that had adversely affected my mental health. This pattern, I observed, mirrored in my son, reflecting the generational impact of familial struggles, including the tragic suicide of my father.
The turning point in my narrative emerged when I chose to confront my pain and redefine my identity. Hours of therapy, physical exercise, and solitary reflection became crucial components of my healing journey.
Though it wasn’t evident then, the decision to reclaim my power marked the beginning of positive transformation.
Over time, I evolved from someone who allowed failures and challenges to define them into a full-time advocate for mental health. My dedication extends beyond personal growth to a broader mission of destigmatizing mental health challenges. In this transition, my story has become a source of inspiration and empowerment, demonstrating the potential for transformative change when failures are confronted and learned from.
Christopher, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
During the COVID-19 pandemic, I experienced a significant downturn in my mental health. The tools and coping mechanisms that had been reliable in the past suddenly proved inadequate in the face of the unprecedented challenges brought about by the global health crisis. The familiar strategies that once provided solace and resilience seemed to lose their effectiveness, compelling me to grapple with the need to find alternative ways to navigate this tumultuous period.
This realization prompted a profound journey of self-discovery and adaptation. Faced with the necessity to cultivate new coping strategies, I embarked on a process of introspection and experimentation. It became imperative to explore avenues that resonated with the unique challenges posed by the pandemic, allowing me to foster personal growth and resilience. In 2021, Mentally Shredded was created as a way for me to reclaim my power and bridge the gap from who I was, to who I wanted to be.
As the founder of Mentally Shredded, this personal journey paralleled the ethos of the company. Can you open up about how you funded your business?
Our business funding journey began in 2021 with a bootstrap approach. Initially, we embarked on this venture without a clear direction, navigating the complexities of entrepreneurship by learning as we went along. However, by the end of 2021, we noticed a growing interest in merchandise and apparel featuring the “Mentally Shredded” brand name. This realization prompted a strategic shift, leading us to capitalize on this demand by adding our merchandise to our website.
In 2022, we introduced our signature event, Mentally Shredded RXD, which quickly garnered attention from our audience, attracting sponsors and donations that contributed significantly to our revenue. The success of this event served as a testament to our adaptability and responsiveness to market preferences. It became a pivotal component in sustaining and growing our business.
The bulk of our business revenue comes from sales on apparel, merchandise, sponsorships and ticket sales for events; we aspire to broaden our offerings, including hosting our first inaugural retreat. Every dollar generated is reinvested into the business, underscoring our commitment to its growth and development. This principle is not just a mantra; it is the core philosophy in which we operate – living and thriving by the reinvestment principle.
Looking ahead, we aspire to secure additional funding through grants, corporate sponsors, and partnerships, a strategic step to further fuel our expansion. Our vision includes establishing a dedicated space with in-house mental health professionals, reinforcing our commitment to providing comprehensive support to our community. The future indeed looks bright, guided by our unwavering dedication to innovation and community well-being.
