We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Christopher Tracy a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Christopher, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Before we get into specifics, let’s talk about success more generally. What do you think it takes to be successful?
Well first off success has different meanings for everyone and I guess it’s a matter of perspective. Do you want to be the best? Do you want to just get by? You level of success is based on your level of risk and to some on the road to success risk is considered a bad word.
For me the base of success has to be the service you provide for your customers. Are you giving them what they ask for or steering them in the right direction if they don’t know what they want?
Word of mouth for me has also been the best advertising I could ever want We are very proud of the service we provide for our customers and in return they tell all of their friends and it can spread effectively especially if you are in a densely populated area.
I love what I do and I don’t do it for any other reason and that’s why I feel I am successful.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I am the owner of Knox Street Postal Center and I have owned and operated it since 2001. I got into the industry by chance as I was splitting my time between being a DJ at Knox Street Pub(KSP Henderson) and working at the store when the previous owner wanted to sell it to me since I had been working there so right place right time for me.
Coming from a service industry perspective I just try to be as thorough as I can with everyone because again I fully believe your service to your customers can build or tear down your brand.
We handle UPS/FEDEX/DHL/USPS shipping and provide private mailbox rentals for over 500 people and this is where being thorough is very important because one mistake on an address when you are shipping something or not picking up on an error on a label someone brings in to us can cause a delay or result in a lost package and this can of course go a long way in building your brand because as we all know a good review can get you 3 new customers but a bad one can cause you to lose 10.
For us we try to get it right the 1st time because there may not be a 2nd.
Our customer service sets us apart from a lot of other places.
Obviously you can’t make everyone happy but we try and from what we are told we go far and beyond what other businesses like mine do.
Can you tell us about what’s worked well for you in terms of growing your clientele?
Anticipating your customers needs and trying to fulfill them.
All business models should be built around this simple sentence.
People want to know that when they walk in that you can and want to help them and in most cases they will help you by spreading the word which in turn builds your clientele.
If you have multiple revenue streams in your business, would you mind opening up about what those streams are and how they fit together?
We offer onsite notary service with no apppoitment needed and we partnered with Fieldprint and through them we provide a comprehensive suite of electronic fingerprinting which we handle around 20+ appointments a day.
We also partnered with Ipostal1 which allows us to rent mailboxes virtually of which we have around 300 or more clients.
