We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Christopher Sky. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Christopher below.
Christopher, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today When did you first know you wanted to pursue a creative/artistic path professionally?
When I was 4, my mom said I told her I wanted to be on tv. I believe, as someone really adventurous, it was one of many things I wanted to be growing up. I was always a performer though, from sports to choirs to being on dance teams. Performing was something so fun for me that I don’t think I processed it as a real profession. Especially growing up you hear how much people hate their jobs and can’t wait to get off work. You start to think that having a job isn’t a fun thing. And if it’s fun, it probably isn’t safe or realistic.
So growing up I knew I wanted to perform and be on tv but I didn’t take it too seriously until I got into high school and took my first real theatre class. I had a great teacher who made sure it wasn’t all books and writing, but real performances and a real look into what it means to be an actor. We would do acting exercises, improv, and interact with each other in ways that were so vulnerable and expressive that it felt realer than real life.
It was my first time seeing that acting and self expression isn’t about pretending, something I felt like I had done so much of. Everyday in life especially high school you want to make friends and fit in and come across cool, and acting allowed me to be completely myself or whatever I wanted to be judgement free. There was nothing as liberating as that and from that moment on, I knew I really wanted to be an actor professionally.
However I didn’t truly explore it til I was in college and I tried to go the “safe”route by taking up business. I eventually got bored and hated it, then decided I have nothing to lose and went full force into acting. I changed my major to theatre and started auditioning for whatever plays and films I could find. My career started from there.
Christopher, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I am an actor and what I provide is a real look into what it means to be human. I bring the feelings that we experience everyday to a screen where you can look at it and say “I feel that”. Or you can look at it and be entertained and escape from your own life. What encourages me as an actor is knowing that someone will feel what I feel when I watch cinema. That indescribable feeling of connectedness to humanity. I hope that when people watch me, especially the misunderstood or broken hearted, that they feel like they are not alone and that there is someone out there feeling the same things.
Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
I hit a period in my life end of 2022 and beginning of 2023 where I was having severe panic attacks, depression, and suicidal thoughts. It was something I never felt before but after Covid and struggling so hard to survive, plus seeing so many “happy” people on social media. I felt like I didn’t know who I was or what I was doing in life. I just knew it felt hard, lonely, and like everyone was happier than me. That’s inspired me to go to therapy, get better friends, and grew closer to God. Then my life has changed for the better. Now I no longer struggle with any of those things and now I can express gratitude for even the tiniest of things I once took for granted
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
Knowing that I can make someone’s day better through my work. Also knowing that I can take my hardest and most painful emotions, expressive them, and know that someone can relate or feel understood
