We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Christopher Simms a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Christopher, thanks for joining us today. Do you wish you had started sooner?
Timing is such an intricate concept. Because we can refer to timing as days, months or years. Or we can refer to timing as being prepared. I wish I was prepared sooner. I wish I had started earlier. But if I’m on God’s timing, then I’m right on time. My journey in music began at an early age. I was born and raised in the church. My parents were pastors. As a pastors kid, you have to know how to do something. So i started out playing and learning percussion through my brother. One day during rehearsal, my sister, who was the choir director, pulled me off of the percussion and handed me the microphone and said here, you’re going to lead this song. That’s when I discovered I had the ability to sing. I also developed a passion for singing. From there, I joined several groups and choirs to hone my gift. It was in the group, Sons Of God, where I discovered I could write my own music.
I don’t know what starting later or sooner would look like for me, but I do know I wasted a lot of time with comparison. One of mentors once said, comparison is the enemies weapon of mass destruction and mass distraction. And thats what I did. I destroyed myself with comparison.
I do believe I would have been further along in my career. But I also believe that there are things God has guarded me from. So ultimately, I have no regrets. And it’s never too late until I’m dead.
Christopher, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
Overall, What I do is not new. It’s been done before and will continue long after me. I believe what stands out is my character. My gift might get me through the door, but it’s my character that will determine if I get a seat at the table or escorted out of the room. There are several things I do. Most of which revolves around music. I’m a singer, songwriter, drummer, and worship leader. Over the years I’ve noticed inconsistencies in musical performances in churches. I’ve taken my years of experience and training to form my company, Worship Worx. I go to different churches and I assist them with structuring or restructuring their worship teams specifically.
There was one church I worked with in NY, they had only one worship leader. In a year we grew that to a team of 10 people.
My focus with working with worship teams is team building, communication, vocal training, ear training, etc
“I am also a Gospel recording artist. I have a few singles out and I’m working on an album. You will love “Desperately Waiting” featuring Marcus Aaron. “I’m Good” featuring DJ Nicholas and Bronx Emcee. Also, check out “Back To You” featuring Kristian Rose & Marcus Pena.
What can society do to ensure an environment that’s helpful to artists and creatives?
I think it really depends on who you are catering to. I cater to Christians or those who want to know more about Christianity. Or those who just like Christian music. It is important for those who we cater to, to support. Buy our music and merchandise. Stream our music and put it on repeat. Call radio stations and request our songs to be played. Purchase a ticket to the concert.
What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
I want to die empty. I want to die knowing that everything God placed me here to do is done. I want to say father it is finished. Every song. Every sermon. I was sent here during this time to a problem. Creation is an answer to a problem. I am God’s creation, so God must have sent me here to be the answer to a problem.
