We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Christopher Scott. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Christopher below.
Christopher, appreciate you joining us today. We’d love to hear the backstory behind a risk you’ve taken – whether big or small, walk us through what it was like and how it ultimately turned out.
My career has been a series of risks. Sometime they are calculated and sometimes they are done with no thought and full trust in what may come.
One that always stands out is from about nine years ago. I was working at a tattoo studio in Maryland, and planned to move with my wife at the time and our kids across the country to New Mexico. It was a smaller town we where moving to and I had never lived there, Another tattooer at the shop asked where I was planning to work (at this point it was all set up) once I got to New Mexico. I told him I had no idea and that I would find somewhere once we moved. He looked at me like I was crazy “You’re moving across the country with a family that you support alone and have no job lined up!?” I just laughed and said “No, but things always work out.”
I ended up finding a job working for a lady who is now a good friend and my career really took off while at her shop. This is an example of the trust is takes sometimes to build your career. Sometimes you don’t really understand why you’re doing something but you know you have to.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
My name is Christopher Scott. I’m 40 years old and have been tattooing for 18 years. I’ve been making art since before I can remember and have never stopped. Everyone has a calling in life, a duty perhaps. Making art is one that I cannot Deny.
I have a studio called Electric Sabbath in Hagerstown, MD where I tattoo and paint. I like to make people’s Tattoo Dreams into a reality.
I’m most proud of the fact that I’ve been able to support myself and my kids solely on art and tattooing for 18 years. I’m so thankful for all my clients and the people who have always believed in me.
Is there mission driving your creative journey?
My entire mission is to know my True Self, and in turn to help other’s find theirs. I want to show to Middle Way of life.
We’d love to hear the story of how you built up your social media audience?
I think this should be the last thing on any artist’s agenda. THE LAST. When my social media started to gain a lot of traction, I had people reaching out asking my how I did it. I told them “by staying up every single night drawing” My father told me one time “behind every overnight success story is 10 years of hard work.” In my mind there is no short cut to getting a following online, and if there is, it won’t be genuine so the followers won’t matter. My suggestion is to Love what you do, or find something you do love and put your maximum effort into it. The social media stuff will come. Or not!
