We were lucky to catch up with Christopher Sambursky recently and have shared our conversation below.
Christopher, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today How did you scale up? What were the strategies, tactics, meaningful moments, twists/turns, obstacles, mistakes along the way? We’d love to hear the backstory the illustrates how you grew the firm
How did I scale up? This is probably the question I get asked the most. A lot of people see the success, but don’t see the hard work and long ass hours you sacrifice to grow not just your business, but a brand. I’m very stubborn and I hate to fail with a passion. I’m very unorthodox when it came to my own personal growth. I definitely took the hard route. I didn’t join any power teams, I didn’t have any mentors, I didn’t read books, I never asked for anything besides information about contracts at the beginning of my career. This route isn’t for the faint of heart in the sales industry. There is zero compensation! I was actually losing money for the first year and a half or so. Getting people to trust you for such a big financial decision with no experience is very hard. Would you go to a surgeon with no experience? Would you use a lawyer with no experience? You get what I’m saying. My growth didn’t happen over night. I wanted to quit a 100 times, but I didn’t. I wasn’t good with handling rejection. But you better get use to it, if you want to survive in this industry. You better have some thick ass skin, because your feelings will get hurt. People will pretend to care about your well being. People will pretend to care about your struggles. People will care to pretend about your emotions. But they don’t really give a shit! In this industry, it’s every man for himself. You want to scale up your business? Focus on you! It’s perfectly ok to try to emulate other people who are successful, but I highly recommend finding out what works for you. It can take time, but it will be worth it at the end. Try to attract people that fit your lifestyle and characteristics. Everyone needs a home! I know for a fact, I’m not everyones cup of tea. So focus on people you can relate to. There’s plenty of business to go around in this industry. One thing that drives me nuts, is false advertising. I know there’s an old saying that goes, “fake it, until you make it.” Don’t act like you’re a top producer if you haven’t sold anything. Don’t mislead people. Be honest with people. Your growth will come overtime, once you treat people fairly and with respect. Word of mouth will get around eventually. Still at this point in my career, I’ve done zero advertising besides post on Facebook. My business is 100% referrals and business is good! Your reputation can go down the toilet overnight. Brand yourself around your own strengths and personalities. Remember this industry is not always filled with rainbows and gold. You have to step it up earn that shit!!!
Christopher, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
Well, I feel most people know me to be a pretty funny character. Some might find me obnoxious, but I’m ok with that. Making people smile and happy comes first. That doesn’t mean I don’t take my job seriously. I’m here to make sure you get the best deal possible. I also won’t be pushed around by anyone. At the end of the day, I like to mediate solutions that’s fair for both sides of the transaction. I feel hostility get’s you no where anymore. Trust me, I’ve been down that road before many times. As you get older, you suppose to get wiser. When you add that with some street smarts, people seem to be happy with my services. The beauty about referrals is, they know why they hired you. It eliminates the feeling each other out process. Which saves a lot of time. With me, you won’t break me mentally and at the end of the day, you have to understand it’s always business first. It seems a lot of people know me now because of my closing outfits! I started wearing funny outfits to closings just to make moody people smile during covid. I didn’t realize it would become such a hit. I had no intentions of it ever becoming a brand. But it definitely has over the past couple of years. Seems people are more worried about my outfits than they are with the actual deal these days. Stay focused clients, i’m here to make and save you money!!!
Any stories or insights that might help us understand how you’ve built such a strong reputation?
Easy answer. No bullshit approach with everything I do! Whether you like me or not, at the end of the transaction, you will respect me. You will be glad that you hired me. I’ve been told several times, that they had doubts about hiring me because of my bluntness. But at the end, I always hear the same thing. Great job! Besides one time, but that was a fluke that involved marital problems. I had zero control over that.
Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
The answer to this is something I typically never use to talk about. Now I don’t have a problem speaking about it. It’s sobriety. I’ve been sober going on almost 2 years now. Alcohol was something that I used to mask stress and a lot of problems that I had at work and out of work. It definitely will get the best of you. I know people say all the time, “I don’t have a problem.” In reality, they do and it will waste your life away. Once you stop, Your thought process and focus becomes much more clearer. I wasted so much valuable time in my younger days with letting alcohol consume my life. My clients now get a new and improved me. Super focused with no distractions besides work relates issues. You won’t regret hiring me.
