Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Christopher Newland. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Christopher, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Did you always know you wanted to pursue a creative or artistic career? When did you first know?
I’ve been a visual maker for as long as I can remember. From being a young child, drawing the figures I found in the comics pages of the newspaper, to studying drawing, painting and photography in high school, I have been an artist in pursuit of a vision. While I deferred ideas of becoming a full time artist for a great portion of my adult life, there came a time when I knew I wanted to devote my life to making art.

Christopher, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I am a visual artist who uses photography and painting (traditional and digital) in my practice. I have been a photographer for well over 40 years, and while analog processes and darkroom work were important to my development, I fully embrace digital photography and inkjet printing. Much the same can be said for my painting practice: I enjoy creating digital paintings and fully embrace the vast versatility that such methods offer. And I don’t really miss the smell of terps! While I still occasionally work on canvas, most of my painting is now done digitally. Digital paintings look amazing when printed on fine inkjet paper.
I create a variety of art products which can be seen on my social media, and purchased from my website. I strive to create high quality artwork for those who value such products and don’t want to simply buy mass produced items from certain retailers…nothing could be more disappointing than to walk into a friend’s home and see the exact same print hanging on the wall! I hope that my clients and customers recognize the value of work being produced by independent artists such as myself.
Alright – so here’s a fun one. What do you think about NFTs?
Buyer beware.

What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
I derive a great deal of satisfaction merely from finishing a piece of work and feeling like I understand it. As an artist, I often feel unsure of myself and unguided on the journey. There aren’t any rules in this field, and that can be quite unsettling. Many artists are plagued by self-doubt and discouragement. I fight those kinds of demons on a daily basis. So, to create something that I am proud of, that I understand on an intellectual and emotional level, is a victory. To have such a creation then validated by an outside observer is amazing. But I have to take that first step in recognition and understanding. I find it difficult to show my work to anyone else if I haven’t established a relationship with it first.
