We were lucky to catch up with Christopher Nelsen recently and have shared our conversation below.
Christopher, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. We’d love to start by getting your thoughts on what you are seeing as some the biggest trends emerging in your industry.
Oh, there are some really cool trends happening right now! One big one is biophilic design, which is all about bringing nature indoors with lots of plants and natural materials. Another trend is the shifting from the greige/neutral trend of the last several years and using bold, vibrant colors to make a statement in different rooms. Then there is new traditional design, which is super interesting! It takes classic, timeless elements and gives them a modern twist. Think of it as mixing traditional furniture with contemporary colors and patterns. It’s all about creating a cozy, elegant space that still feels fresh and updated. Of course, lets not forget about multifunctional spaces. People are getting creative with how they use their homes, especially with more folks working from home.

Christopher, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I’ve always been a creative. I began my creative journey by becoming a Le Cordon Bleu certified chef, however, I always had a passion for interior design. My natural talent for design and my eye for detail led me to make a career change. During the pandemic I had time to do some self reflection and to reevaluate my career. I decided to pursue a new path that aligned more closely with my passions and values. The decision to go back to school and enter the interior design field, has been both fulfilling and rewarding.
As a full-service interior designer I offer a comprehensive range of services to transform a space from start to finish. These services include consultation to understand the client’s needs, preferences, and budget. Space planning to create functional layouts to maximize the use of space. Design concept development to create a cohesive design concept the includes color schemes, furniture styles and décor elements. The selection of materials and finishes that are appropriate for the project. The sourcing and selection of furniture, lighting, and fixtures that align with the design concept. Simple project management to ensure the project is completed in a timely manner and within budget. And lastly, styling and accessorizing to add the final touches that complete the look. These services ensure that every aspect of the design process is covered, resulting in a cohesive and well-executed space.
My design philosophy is to always create a space that feels harmonious and tells a unique story through its design. A cohesive design narrative starts by understanding the purpose and function of the space as well as the client’s personal style and preferences. Then, a design concept can be developed that reflects these elements and colors, patterns, textures, and furniture are incorporated to align with the overall theme. I want each piece to contribute to the story, whether it’s a vintage piece that adds history or a modern element that brings a fresh perspective.
When these things blend to create a beautiful space, I’m proud to see the joy I’ve created for a client. I know that while interior design may seem trivial, I’ve enriched my client’s life by making it just a little bit better as they live and interact in the space I’ve created for them.

Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
As an interior designer, my mission is to create beautiful, functional, and personalized spaces that reflect the unique tastes and lifestyles of my clients. By blending modern innovation with timeless design principles, I strive to transform every space into a harmonious and inspiring environment where form meets function. My commitment to excellence, attention to detail, and passion for design ensure that each project is a true reflection of my clients’ visions and aspirations. The ultimate aim is to enhance the quality of life for the occupants by improving the overall look, feel, and usability of the space.

What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
One of the most rewarding aspects of being an interior designer is seeing how my work can transform a space, enhancing both its aesthetic and functional qualities. It’s incredibly satisfying to create environments that not only look beautiful but also improve the way people live and interact with those spaces. I love seeing spaces and people come alive.
