We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Christopher McCullough a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Christopher thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Let’s start with the story of your mission. What should we know?
My love for cooking started as a child. I would go in the kitchen and mix different seasonings to eventually create something special. I have always enjoyed cooking, but what makes it special for me is seeing customers expression when they bite into my cuisine. My passion for people and cooking is what keeps me going. We meet as strangers but you leave as family. Giving people a unique flavor profile that they will remembered has always been my mission. If you love what you do, you’ll never work a day in your life.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
It started back in 2014 as a high school student in my Foods 1 class. This class allowed me to get hands on knowledge as well as an understanding of food safety. Fast forward to college in 2019 I simply got tired of eating ramen noodles. I decided to create my own seasonings and marinades to enhance the flavor of the food I ate. I went from experimenting to selling plates and posting content. Eventually, people started seeing my post and asked when is the plate sale? From word of mouth to social media reposting Soulful Kreations has grown. I am most proud of the continuous support of my customers. They know when ordering with me their food will be fresh, portions will be big, and the flavor will leave them wanting more.

Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
I had to unlearn thinking I could do it all alone.. Starting out, as more people saw my food through social media more bookings would come that ranged from a romantic dinner for two to a 560 person wedding party. I have family and friends that would be willing to help but I wanted to always be hands on with my business. I had to learn that it’s ok to ask for help. It’s ok to hire people regardless of experience. Me learning these things has helped me do larger events. It also allowed me to network with other chefs and land multiple partnership deals.

Any insights you can share with us about how you built up your social media presence?
I’ve always dreamed of having my own business. Before I launched Soulful Kreations I pondered on it for months until I just decided to create a instagram for it. People started following and reposting and buisness has grown and will continue to. Some come to learn recipes and some come just to watch. No matter the purpose I continue to put out meaningful content that shows my passion. The advice I would give to someone starting is stay true to yourself. People will follow and some will unfollow that’s life. Whether you have 50 followers or 100k, being intentional about your brand will keep you relevant- don’t be afraid to ask for help and think outside the box.
