We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Christopher Kendrick a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Christopher , thanks for joining us today. We’d love to hear the backstory behind a risk you’ve taken – whether big or small, walk us through what it was like and how it ultimately turned out.
When I was 23-24 years old, I made the decision to move to Atlanta and go to film school. At the time I was a local music producer, rapper, engineer etc.; in my hometown. Me and my friends started shooting our own music videos and a few other rappers took notice. They offered to pay me to shoot their videos. That led to me falling in love with film making. I had finally realized what God put me hear to do. So i wouldn’t really call it a risk. I think it’s more like destiny.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I’m an American filmmaker who specializes in dark, funny, cinematic films. I’ve been creating music videos and short films for about 11 years now. I recently released a film by the name of “Atlantafornication” on Amazon Prime for those who enjoy a witty and dark story about a dysfunctional married couple. I grew up about 15 minutes outside of Montgomery, Alabama. I now reside in Atlanta, Georgia, home to Art official Pictures, my production company. I spent about five years in Hollywood learning the business behind film making. There I was able to cultivate what I like to call “film grammar”. It’s the unseen poetry in the scenes and the way they come together to create a film.
We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
First off, I just want to say no matter how difficult the journey is, it’s yours, it’s beautiful, embrace it. Film making is a career that requires massive amounts of resilience. But it also requires massive amounts of discipline. You have to be able to love your craft just as much as you love life itself because they are one in the same. There was a time when I fought to create short films and it seemed so difficult that I couldn’t imagine what it was like to create a feature length movie. It seemed impossible. I thought I needed millions of dollars to make a feature. So I prayed, meditated, medicated, cried a little but I stayed my course and here I am now working on my second feature film.
: Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
My greatest goal is to tell compelling stories that anyone can enjoy if they take the time to listen.
