Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Christopher Jessup. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Christopher, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. We’d love to hear about when you first realized that you wanted to pursue a creative path professionally.
I’ve always known that I wanted to pursue an artistic path. As a child, I listened to a lot of Jazz music, and I would copy what I heard by ear on the piano and improvise. Later on, I learned how to notate my improvisations and turn them into full compositions. Music is and always has been in my blood!

Christopher, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I’m a composer and pianist based in New York City. I’ve had my compositions performed and recorded by the London Symphony Orchestra, the Brno Contemporary Orchestra, the Juilliard Orchestra, GRAMMY® Award-winning choir The Crossing, the Kühn Choir of Prague, the National Sawdust Ensemble, and countless others. As a pianist, I’ve performed at Carnegie Hall nearly a dozen times. I’ve also performed as a soloist with orchestras in North America and Europe. I’ve received recognition from ASCAP, the American Prize, the Respighi Prize, and National Sawdust. I’ve also appeared in publications such as The New York Times, Gramophone, Fanfare, and Pianist Magazine. I studied at The Juilliard School.

For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
The most rewarding aspect of being an artist is the feedback I get from musicians who play my work. I am always humbled to receive praise from the world-class artists and ensembles I am fortunate enough to work with. Their feedback motivates me and validates me as an artist.

Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
My goal is always to make good music and be true to myself. I want to make music that comes from my soul because that’s when it is most authentic and convincing.
