We recently connected with Christopher Deal and have shared our conversation below.
Christopher, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Let’s kick things off with your mission – what is it and what’s the story behind why it’s your mission?
When I first started woodworking I was still working full-time. The company I worked for had stacks of pallets laying around that they used as tables and desks. I saw a need for more functional work stations than just the wobbly pallets. With our mission to repurpose and reuse I used pallets and wood form construction sites that were being tossed out and built workstations that they still use today.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
I got started with woodworking when my wife wanted a few custom pieces for our home. We see wood, furniture, and other materials being thrown away all the time. Our thought was how can we use some of those items. So began Grit and Nails, a husband and wife team on a mission to have good quality furniture and decor, using items that others may throw away, but bring out the beauty. A piece of pallet wood, once planed down, can look new again. Or keep it rustic for that shabby chic look. We scour construction sites (with their permission of course!), behind stores for pallets, yard sales, old barns we can purchase and tear down, and so on.
We have expanded into new collections with new wood to bring a more finished piece into your home. From repurposed to brand new we got you covered! Featuring woods such as Ash, Ambrosia Maple (Wormy Wood), Walnut, Cherry, Oak, and many more.
The most proud point is the growth and versatility in the piece that we create. We grown from a one piece order to furnishing an entire home. Being able to take a photo and recreate it into an heirloom piece that will last for generations. We offer our clients complete customization for their dream furniture.
We’d love to hear the story of how you turned a side-hustle into a something much bigger.
Staring out it was me making thing’s for my wife. I was still working a full time job. We rented space in a store and sold small pieces. Once we moved we went more official with the business. We branched out into more finished pieces with hardwoods.
After we moved I started networking in the woodworking community and started picking up on new techniques and learning different ways to build furniture pieces.
After we moved here we found the Perfect Piece in Cary, NC. We became a vendor there and it’s brought us a lot of opportunities and new clients.
What’s been the best source of new clients for you?
We get a lot of our clients from Facebook and other social media sites.
